His hair was longer around his ears, and he wore the gray work shirt he had favored before moving offshore full-time. Carol sat beside him, one hand resting on a folder. That I\u2019m some criminal mastermind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what you are yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything I did was because Gulf Horizon was going to change our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur lives?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you would have panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean I would have said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand someone putting my property on a loan application without permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t final.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had my signature on a transfer agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Warren Pike?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>It lasted less than a second.<\/p>\n<p>But I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever heard of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sitting beside him in a photograph at your mother\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes changed.<\/p>\n<p>There was no confusion now.<\/p>\n<p>Only calculation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoodnight, Travis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJune, where did you get the photograph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward the guest room.<\/p>\n<p>He followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Melissa give it to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed the door.<\/p>\n<p>He struck it once with his mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe records list Elaine Parker as an authorized signer on some documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dead mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Warren Pike approved them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my fingers against my temple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is gone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became perfectly quiet.<\/p>\n<p>One hundred eighty-six thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Money Daddy had left specifically to protect the land.<\/p>\n<p>Gone.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca what was coming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your father\u2019s hospice notes indicate he could not reliably hold a pen that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Daddy\u2019s last three days had been difficult.<\/p>\n<p>His hands trembled.<\/p>\n<p>He could barely lift water.<\/p>\n<p>I had fed him ice chips with a spoon.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said,
