support.”

“Yes.”

That felt different immediately.

Not because it was objectively right.

Because it aligned with what I wanted.

“How much would go to the trust?”

“After taxes, expenses, and your settlement, approximately six hundred thousand.”

I closed my eyes.

Six hundred thousand dollars.

Transportation.

Medication.

Housing.

Maybe dozens of people not having to depend on secret marriages or guilty old boyfriends just to survive treatment.

“Do it.”

Dana paused.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“What about personal inheritance beyond the settlement?”

“I decline it.”

“Entirely?”

“Yes.”

She was quiet.

“May I ask why?”

“Because the part tied to my family is mine to resolve.”

I looked toward the porch.

“The rest is Lacey’s choice to make meaningful.”

Dana said, “You are aware you could accept it without wrongdoing.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

That mattered.

I was not refusing to prove virtue.

I was choosing purpose.

“Draft everything.”

“I will.”

After the call, I found Jeremy outside repairing the porch step.

I told him.

He listened.

Then said, “That sounds like you.”

I smiled.

“You said that before.”

“Still true.”

“You agree?”

“Yes.”

“If I had kept everything?”

“I would have supported that too.”

I studied him.

“I believe you.”

His face softened.

That phrase was becoming possible again.

Slowly.

Later that week, Cynthia called with another update.

The prosecutor’s office had requested documents related to Jeremy and Lacey’s marriage filings.

The legal consequences were no longer theoretical.

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“It means someone is reviewing whether charges are appropriate.”

Jeremy was sitting across from me.

His face went pale.

“Bigamy?”

“Potentially.”

“Fraud?”

“Potentially.”

Jeremy asked, “Do they want me to come in?”

“Not yet.”

Cynthia continued.

“You need separate criminal counsel.”

Jeremy nodded.

“I’ll get one.”

I looked at him.

This was the part I could not solve.

No estate decision.

No therapy exercise.

The law would make its own judgment.

After the call, Jeremy sat silently.

I waited.

He finally said, “I’m scared.”

I nodded.

He looked at me.

I did not say it would be fine.

I did not reach for him.

He took a slow breath.

“You do not need to help me with that.”

I felt something shift.

He had learned.

“What are you going to do?”

“Call a lawyer.”

“Good.”

“And go for a walk.”

“Also good.”

He stood.

At the doorway, he paused.

“I’m not asking for reassurance.”

“I know.”

He smiled faintly.

“That one you can say.”

After he left, I sat alone in the kitchen.

The house was quieter.

Not empty.

Not secure either.

Our future now depended on more than whether I wanted to stay.

Jeremy might face charges.

Financial consequences.

Public embarrassment.

Our private disaster could become public record.

For the first time, I asked myself a new question.

Not whether I could forgive him.

Whether I would still choose to stand beside him if the consequences finally arrived.

<a
