guilt over how we started become part of why I accepted things I should have questioned.”

Jeremy nodded.

“One current choice?”

“You first.”

He looked at the paper.

“I choose to answer what you ask even when the answer may make you leave.”

My chest tightened.

I read mine.

“I choose not to use uncertainty to control you.”

He frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I am not going to threaten divorce every time I am angry if I have not decided that.”

Jeremy looked almost relieved.

Then ashamed of the relief.

“Thank you.”

“It is not a gift.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

We sat quietly.

Then my phone rang.

Dana.

I answered.

“Please tell me nobody found another secret marriage.”

She laughed.

“No.”

“Good start.”

“But we got preliminary feedback from the title company.”

I straightened.

Jeremy watched me.

“What did they say?”

“The twenty-percent agreement appears stronger than expected.”

My pulse quickened.

“And the six acres?”

“More complicated.”

“Of course.”

“There is a possible settlement route.”

“With whom?”

“Lacey’s estate.”

I laughed.

“I am the executor.”

“Yes.”

“So I may have to negotiate with myself.”

“Essentially.”

“That seems unhealthy.”

“It is legally manageable.”

I rubbed my forehead.

“What would a settlement look like?”

“Recognize your inherited contractual interest, waive the historical land claim, and transfer clear title through the estate.”

“Meaning?”

“You could receive a defined portion of the property or cash value without years of litigation.”

“How much?”

“Likely somewhere between two hundred and three hundred thousand, depending on valuation.”

Jeremy’s eyebrows rose.

I stood and walked toward the window.

“And the rest of Lacey’s estate?”

“Still governed by the will.”

“Meaning still left to me.”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

The money was becoming impossible to ignore.

“Dana.”

“Yes?”

“I need a way to separate what may actually belong to my family from what Lacey chose to give me.”

“That is exactly what we should do.”

Relief.

Again, categories.

“What is next?”

“A formal valuation.”

“Do it.”

After I hung up, Jeremy asked, “How much?”

I told him.

He leaned back.

“That is a lot.”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do?”

I looked at him.

“Counseling homework.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“Regret versus choice.”

I sat.

“My mother made choices. Lacey made choices. I cannot keep reacting to their choices as if accepting or rejecting money decides whether I forgive them.”

Jeremy nodded.

“So?”

“So I will decide based on what is responsible now.”

A small smile moved across his face.

“That sounds like you.”

“Which version?”

“The one I should have trusted.”

The sentence caught me.

He did not add anything.

Good.

Later that night, I passed the guest room on the way to bed.

Jeremy’s door was open.

He sat at the desk writing.

I stopped.

He looked up.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

I almost kept walking.

Then I said, “I am still angry.”

“I know.”

I gave him a look.

He corrected himself.

“I believe you.”

Better.

“And I am still here.”

Jeremy’s expression changed.

He did not smile.

He did not thank me.

He simply nodded.

That restraint may have been the most hopeful thing either of us had done.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: A Legal Review of Lacey’s Estate Forced Jill to Decide Which Money Was Hers, Which Was Guilt, and Which Should Become Something Else

The marriage counselor’s office was on the second floor of a converted house with pale green siding and a porch too cheerful for the conversations happening inside it.
