automatically.

Sell.

Refuse.

Donate.

Something decisive.

Instead I said, “I want to think.”

Jeremy’s voice softened.

“Then think.”

No advice.

No pressure.

No attempt to shape the outcome.

When I reached home, he was on the porch.

He did not come to the car.

He waited until I walked toward him.

I held the framed photograph of my mother and Eleanor.

Jeremy looked at it.

“Wow.”

“I know.”

“They look happy.”

“They were.”

I sat beside him.

For a while, we watched evening settle over the yard.

Then I said, “I made another decision.”

Jeremy went still.

“About us?”

“Partly.”

He waited.

“I’m not filing for divorce right now.”

His breath changed.

I held up a hand.

“That is not reconciliation.”

“I know.”

“I’m not promising I’ll stay.”

“I know.”

“I am choosing not to leave while everything is still exploding.”

Jeremy nodded.

“Okay.”

“And I therapy, I’m done.”

A weak laugh escaped him.

“Fair.”

I looked across the yard.

For days, every revelation had forced me to react.

Courthouse.

Hospital.

Death.

Money.

Parents.

Property.

Now, finally, I had made a decision no dead person wrote down for me.

No lawyer required it.

No husband requested it.

No dying woman suggested it.

I chose time.

Not forgiveness.

Not punishment.

Time.

And whatever came next would have to survive the truth.
