If you are hearing this, my son has finally found enough courage to tell you the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy sat down hard.<\/p>\n<p>His mother continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love him, but he is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He covered his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if he tells you he lied because he was protecting you, do not let him hide inside that word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>He was crying.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has always believed love means carrying pain for other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not love by itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes love means trusting someone enough to let them be hurt by the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen was silent except for her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI failed you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel began crying beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew about Lacey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked Rachel not to tell you while I was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was selfish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel lowered her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid my son would lose me, lose Lacey, and lose you all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made your life smaller so his would feel safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wiped my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she said something I did not expect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever you decide about Jeremy, do not stay because I loved him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not stay because twenty-two years feels too large to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not stay because Lacey is sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not stay because people will judge you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay only if you can choose him after knowing him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy\u2019s sob broke through the recording.<\/p>\n<p>His mother\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if you cannot, leave him with the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot silence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTruth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape clicked.<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy\u2019s mother had been dead nearly two years.<\/p>\n<p>Yet in that moment she had done what none of us managed while she lived.<\/p>\n<p>She placed the choice where it belonged.<\/p>\n<p>With me.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>His face was wet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you thinking?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the tape recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Then the box.<\/p>\n<p>Then my mother\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lacey\u2019s journal.<\/p>\n<p>Our marriage had become a room full of dead people telling us what honesty should have been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thinking we have spent enough years letting the dead make decisions for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy slowly nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what do we do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe start making our own.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=25735\">Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Jill\u2019s First Decision About Their Future Forced Jeremy to Give Up Control\u2014and Put Their Home, Money, and Marriage on Separate Ground<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For several seconds, I could not make Jeremy\u2019s words mean anything.
