home after midnight.

Pale.

Shaking.

I asked what happened.

He said a worker had fallen from scaffolding.

I had held him in bed while he trembled.

I had stroked his hair.

Told him he had done everything he could.

Comforted him over a fictional accident because he could not admit another woman had nearly died in his arms.

The realization physically hurt.

I stood too quickly.

The chair scraped backward.

“Jill.”

“Don’t.”

I walked outside.

Jeremy did not follow.

Good.

I sat on the back steps.

The afternoon sun had warmed the wood.

For several minutes, I stared at the yard.

That night was one of my clearest memories of closeness.

I had believed Jeremy allowed himself to be vulnerable with me.

Now even that had been built on deception.

The door opened behind me.

I did not turn.

“I said don’t.”

“It’s not Jeremy.”

His sister, Rachel, stepped outside.

I stared at her.

“What are you doing here?”

“Jeremy texted me.”

Anger rose.

“He told you?”

“Not details.”

She sat several feet away.

“He said Lacey died.”

I looked at her sharply.

“You knew about Lacey?”

Rachel’s you?”

Rachel looked toward the kitchen door.

“Because Mom was sick.”

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with
