forgiveness.”

“I know.”

I went upstairs.

Jeremy stayed in the kitchen.

At midnight, my phone rang.

Thomas.

I answered before the second ring.

His voice was low.

“You should come back.”

My heart stopped.

“Is she—”

“Not yet.”

I stood.

“What happened?”

“She asked for both of you.”

Jeremy appeared in the doorway, already awake.

He saw my face.

I put the phone on speaker.

Thomas continued.

“She wants the chapel service tonight.”

Jeremy closed his eyes.

“How long?”

“The doctor thinks hours.”

The room changed.

Everything we had postponed became immediate.

I looked at Jeremy.

No permission needed.

No argument.

“Get the truck.”

He nodded.

We left within five minutes.

Halfway to Nashville, Jeremy said, “If she dies before we get there—”

“She won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“But neither do you.”

He drove faster.

Not recklessly.

Urgently.

We reached Vanderbilt after one in the morning.

Thomas met us at the elevator.

His eyes were red.

“She’s awake.”

Jeremy moved toward Room 714.

Thomas stopped him.

“She wants the chapel first.”

“At one in the morning?”

“The chaplain is coming.”

I looked at Thomas.

“What exactly does she want us to do?”

He swallowed.

“Say goodbye to the version of the past all of you have been carrying.”

Jeremy looked at me.

I did not know whether such a thing could be done.

But we followed Thomas downstairs.

The hospital chapel was small.

Wooden benches.

Soft lights.

No audience.

Cynthia was already there.

David too.

The chaplain stood near the front.

Then two nurses wheeled Lacey in.

She looked impossibly fragile beneath a blanket.

Yet when she saw us, she smiled.

“You came.”

Jeremy sat beside her.

I took the seat on her other side.

Thomas remained one row behind.

Lacey looked around at all of us.

“This is not a wedding.”

The chaplain smiled.

“Understood.”

“It’s not a funeral either.”

“Also understood.”

“What is it?” I asked.

Lacey looked at me.

“A correction.”

The word settled over the chapel.

Then she reached for my hand.

After a moment, I let her take it.

With her other hand, she reached for Jeremy.

He held on immediately.

For the first time in twenty-two years, the three of us were physically connected.

No secrets.

No distance.

No competition.

Just three imperfect people standing at the wreckage of old choices.

The chaplain asked Lacey what she wished to say.

She looked at Jeremy first.

“I loved you.”

He bowed his head.

“I know.”

“I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“You hurt me.”

“Yes.”

“And neither debt needs to be paid anymore.”

Jeremy began crying.

Quietly.

Lacey turned toward me.

“I blamed you for stealing my life.”

My throat tightened.

“I know.”

“You didn’t.”

“I helped hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t steal anything.”

Her grip on my hand tightened weakly.

“I release you from being the villain in my story.”

My eyes filled.

I had not known how badly I needed to hear that.

Then she looked at both of us.

“And I release your marriage from me.”

Jeremy closed his eyes.

I looked toward the little wooden cross on the wall.

The ceremony had no legal force.

No magical power.

But something shifted.

Not forgiveness.

Not repair.

Permission, perhaps.

Permission to stop living inside 2004.

The chaplain said a few quiet words.

Nothing grand.

Nothing about destiny.

Only truth, grace, responsibility, and choice.

Then Lacey looked at Thomas.

“Your turn.”

He stepped forward.

His face broke.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For disappearing.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“You were twenty.”

“So were you.”

She smiled.

“That excuse really is crowded.”

Jeremy and I both laughed through tears.

Thomas knelt beside her chair.

“I wish I had known about the baby.”

“I know.”

“I would have helped.”

“I know.”

“I would have stayed.”

Lacey’s eyes softened.

“Maybe.”

He shook his head.

“I would have.”

She touched his cheek.

“That’s enough.”

Thomas kissed her hand.

No one spoke.

Then Lacey’s eyes shifted toward me again.

“There is one last document.”

I almost laughed.

“You cannot possibly have another document.”

Even dying, she smiled.

“I do.”

Cynthia stepped forward with an envelope.

Lacey whispered, “This one isn’t about money.”

I took it.

“What is it?”

“My statement about Jeremy.”

He frowned.

“What statement?”

“For the investigators.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you write?”

Lacey’s gaze stayed on me.

“The truth.”

“And what truth is that?”

“That the second marriage was my request.”

Jeremy shook his head.

“No.”

“That I knew he was married.”

“No.”

“That I pressured him.”

“Lacey—”

“And that he repeatedly tried to stop.”

Jeremy stood.

“You’re making me sound innocent.”

She looked at him.

“You aren’t.”

That stopped him.

“But you’re not the villain either.”

She looked at me.

“None of us gets to leave as one thing.”

The sentence followed me long after nurses wheeled her back upstairs.

And when dawn began touching the hospital windows, I finally understood what Lacey had been trying to give us.

Not absolution.

Accuracy.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: As Dawn Broke
