I heard through Melissa. I should feel better. I don’t.

My anger hardened.

We had nearly been evicted that year.

I remembered counting quarters for gas.

I remembered Jeremy sitting on the bathroom floor after a job interview, pretending he had allergies because he did not want me to see him cry.

I remembered my mother quietly paying our electric bill.

And all that time, Lacey had helped create the disaster.

The next entry was written months later.

She regretted it.

She tried to call Calvin but lost her nerve.

She drafted a letter confessing the lie but never sent it.

She told herself Jeremy would recover.

He had.

But recovery did not erase what happened.

I kept turning pages.

The journal skipped years.

2010.

2015.

2021.

Then the recent entries became detailed.

Treatment appointments.

Medication side effects.

Descriptions of Jeremy sitting with her.

His jokes.

His arguments with doctors.

His refusal to let her drive after chemotherapy.

And repeatedly, guilt.

Not only guilt over the pregnancy.

Guilt over what she had done to us.

One entry read:

Jeremy told me today about the year after he lost the Reeves job. He still believes Calvin hated him. Jill worked nights while he worked temporary construction. They almost lost their apartment. I sat there knowing part of that was me.

Another:

I considered telling him. Then I imagined him walking away and decided I was still a coward.

I shut my eyes.

The anger was becoming exhausting.

There were too many directions for it to go.

At Lacey.

At Jeremy.

At the past.

At myself.

I continued.

Then I reached an entry dated three years earlier.

The week before the second marriage.

Lacey had written:

Jeremy says he cannot do this without telling Jill. I told him if he tells her, I will refuse.

I read that again.

So Jeremy had wanted to tell me.

At least once.

Lacey had stopped him.

The next paragraph explained why.

She believed I would refuse.

She believed I would expose the legal arrangement.

She believed I might prevent Jeremy from helping her.

Mostly, she admitted, she did not want to face me.

For the first time in the journal, she used a word that surprised me.

Coward.

Not for Jeremy.

For herself.

I was a coward when I left. I was a coward when I called Calvin. I was a coward when I let Jeremy believe the baby was his. Now I am asking him to become a coward with me.

The sentence hurt because it was honest.

Jeremy still chose.

But Lacey had understood what she was asking.

I read until after midnight.

The final entry was only three days old.

I am running out of time.

Jill deserves everything.

Not because she is good and I am bad. We are both more complicated than that.

She deserves the truth because for decades all three of us built our lives around stories that were incomplete.

Jeremy believes he owes me a child.

I believed Jill stole my future.

Jill probably believes she won something from me.

None of us understood that twenty-year-old people are not prizes, villains, or debts.

We were frightened children making adult choices.

The last line had been underlined.

Truth will not save us, but it may stop the damage from traveling farther.

I closed the book.

The house was completely silent.

Then my phone rang.

2:13 a.m.

Jeremy.

My stomach tightened.

I answered immediately.

“What happened?”

His voice was tired.

“Nothing yet.”

I exhaled.

“Then why are you calling?”

“I couldn’t sleep.”

“Neither can I.”

“You read it.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

“You know about Calvin.”

“Yes.”

Jeremy exhaled slowly.

“I found out tonight.”

“How?”

“Lacey told me after you left.”

“How did you react?”

“I wanted to walk out.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“She was crying.”

Anger flashed through me.

“So?”

“I’m not saying that makes it okay.”

“Good.”

Jeremy’s voice lowered.

“I sat there thinking about that year.”

“So did I.”

“You worked so much.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I failed you.”

“You didn’t.”

“I couldn’t find steady work.”

“Because somebody sabotaged you.”

He was silent.

I stared at our kitchen wall.

“Do you regret helping her?”

Jeremy took several seconds.

“I don’t know.”

That answer felt more honest than his previous ones.

“I regret lying to you.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I know.”

“So?”

He exhaled.

“I don’t regret helping someone with cancer.”

“And marrying her?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

The answer surprised me.

“You regret it?”

“I regret what it cost you.”

“That’s still not the same.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I regret thinking guilt could justify anything.”

That was closer.

I leaned back in the chair.

“Jeremy.”

“Yeah?”

“If Lacey had told you three years ago the baby wasn’t yours, would you have married her?”

He did not answer quickly.

“I don’t know.”

“Try.”

Another silence.

“No.”

The word landed heavily.

“Then part of why you married her was repayment.”

“Yes.”

“For something that never happened.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the journal.

“Does that make you hate her?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I remember who we were.”

His voice had gone quiet.

“And because she’s dying.”

“You can be angry at dying people.”

“I am.”

“Good.”

I do not know why I needed to hear that.

Perhaps because sainthood would have been another lie.

“I’m furious,” Jeremy continued. “I’m furious about Calvin.
