You can\u2019t change twenty-two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what am I supposed to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell the truth while there\u2019s still time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nurse stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can go back in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We entered.<\/p>\n<p>Lacey looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>Her oxygen had been increased.<\/p>\n<p>The journal remained in my hands.<\/p>\n<p>She noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached toward Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor which part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy looked toward the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what I feel right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lacey\u2019s eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I needed you to know the baby wasn\u2019t yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>Tears slipped down his face.<\/p>\n<p>I turned away to give him that much privacy.<\/p>\n<p>After a while, Lacey fell asleep.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy and I left quietly.<\/p>\n<p>In the hallway, he said, \u201cI\u2019m going to stay here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you going home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want me to\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I tucked the journal into my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to read.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy stared at the bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are things in there about me you won\u2019t like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are things about Lacey too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you know some.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLacey spent years blaming you for more than losing me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else could she possibly blame me for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy looked toward Room 714.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead the journal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated the answer.<\/p>\n<p>But I had asked for every truth.<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward the elevator.<\/p>\n<p>Before the doors closed, Jeremy said my name.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat stopped being the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doors closed.<\/p>\n<p>At home, the house felt wrong without him.<\/p>\n<p>I made coffee at nine at night and sat at the kitchen table with Lacey\u2019s journal.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes, I simply looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then I removed the elastic band.<\/p>\n<p>A folded envelope slipped out.<\/p>\n<p>Across the front was my mother\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it instantly.<\/p>\n<p>To Eleanor Burcham.<\/p>\n<p>Lacey\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>The postmark was 1990.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded the photocopied letter.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway down the page, I found my own name.<\/p>\n<p>Jill is still little enough not to understand how quickly a family can lose everything.<\/p>\n<p>Then another sentence.<\/p>\n<p>If we cannot recover financially, please never let her know I gave you the money. I would rather she believe we lost it through bad luck than grow up thinking someone owes her for our hardship.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had willingly protected Lacey\u2019s family from a debt while ours collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>And somehow, more than thirty years later, Lacey had decided that debt belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>The next journal entry was dated six months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Today I learned Jill\u2019s mother helped buy the house. Jeremy has no idea.
