this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes sharpened despite the medication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery document. Every promise. Every reason. Every secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced at Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lacey returned her gaze to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo protecting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo protecting him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy said, \u201cJill\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>Lacey\u2019s mouth curved slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo protecting Jeremy,\u201d she agreed.<\/p>\n<p>I put his three-year-old letter onto the bedside table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if there\u2019s something bigger than this marriage, you tell me now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lacey became very still.<\/p>\n<p>That stillness answered the question.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy noticed it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLacey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes remained on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get a vote anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lacey\u2019s breathing had become shallow, but her voice was clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I miscarried twenty-two years ago, Jeremy believed the baby was his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelieved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy\u2019s face lost color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLacey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at Lacey as though he had never seen her before.<\/p>\n<p>Then she opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the reason I never told him is the same reason I left town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy took one step backward.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I had discovered the second marriage, the shock on his face matched my own.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever truth had brought us into Room 714, we had not reached the bottom of it yet.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=25712\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Lacey\u2019s Confession About the Lost Pregnancy Forced Jeremy to Question the Guilt That Had Controlled Every Choice He Made for Twenty-Two Years<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jeremy did not follow me when I left Lacey\u2019s room.
