I sold it after my prognosis changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Jeremy handled the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe helped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I knew I wouldn\u2019t need most of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now you\u2019re leaving it to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJill\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put the document on the bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not taking money from the woman my husband secretly married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lacey\u2019s voice strengthened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don\u2019t think of it as mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat am I supposed to think of it as?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething that was always connected to the life the three of us damaged twenty-two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy turned toward Lacey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to do this today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes remained on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are things he still hasn\u2019t told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>My anger cooled into dread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lacey reached for my hand.<\/p>\n<p>I did not take hers.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>She let her hand fall back onto the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJill, for twenty-two years you believed you stole my future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>His face told me to listen.<\/p>\n<p>Lacey continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed your marriage began with something you had to spend the rest of your life making up for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could you know that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Jeremy talked about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou talked to her about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The answer cut deeper than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Lacey watched us both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou paid family bills when nobody knew. You helped your nephew with college. You stayed with Jeremy\u2019s mother when she was sick. You built a life with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does she know all that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I told her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never told me about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contradiction hung between us.<\/p>\n<p>Lacey took a slow breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want you wondering after I die whether I came back and took him from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDidn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved toward Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was yours because he chose to build a life with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy met my gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose you in 2004.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered that summer differently.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered secret phone calls and stolen meetings.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the thrill of Jeremy choosing me over the woman everyone expected him to marry.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Lacey leaving.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered guilt.<\/p>\n<p>But I had never fully allowed myself to remember Jeremy\u2019s agency.<\/p>\n<p>He had not been an object I could steal.<\/p>\n<p>He had chosen.<\/p>\n<p>And later, he had chosen to lie.<\/p>\n<p>Both truths mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still don\u2019t forgive you,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know whether I can stay married to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pain crossed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lacey watched us quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cThere\u2019s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe doctors don\u2019t think I have much time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy lowered his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDays, maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed suddenly colder.<\/p>\n<p>Lacey smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want one last ceremony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat ceremony?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked from Jeremy to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I want both of you there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I have already spent twenty-two years being angry about a life that never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want my death to cost you another twenty-two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I finally took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers were cold.<\/p>\n<p>Fragile.<\/p>\n<p>Real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was angry with you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what to do with any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither did I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a while, none of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lacey squeezed my fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome to the chapel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Jeremy.<\/p>\n<p>The man I had loved for more than half my life.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had lied to me for three years.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had secretly married the dying woman beside me.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had carried a twenty-two-year-old grief I had never known existed.<\/p>\n<p>I could have walked away.<\/p>\n<p>Part of me wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I looked at Lacey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her tired smile returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as they let me out of here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy stared at me, uncertain whether my answer meant forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>It did not.<\/p>\n<p>I was nowhere near forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>But for the first time since Bonnie had turned that courthouse computer screen away from me, I understood what I needed more than revenge.<\/p>\n<p>I needed the entire truth.<\/p>\n<p>And if Lacey had only days left to tell it, I could no longer afford to leave the room.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=25709\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Before Lacey Could Leave the Hospital, Jeremy Finally Explained the Promise That Turned Compassion Into Three Years of Deception<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The elevator opened onto the seventh floor.
