Call me immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I kept my face neutral.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you sign a temporary authorization, I can negotiate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou haven&#39;t even heard the terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens when three hundred employees lose their jobs because you wanted revenge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That one was deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>He knew exactly where to aim.<\/p>\n<p>For a second, it worked.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Jenna at reception.<\/p>\n<p>Warehouse crews.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Dispatchers.<\/p>\n<p>Mechanics.<\/p>\n<p>Payroll staff.<\/p>\n<p>People with mortgages, children, parents, medical bills.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Martin saying he was siding with the company.<\/p>\n<p>Protecting Daniel was not the same as protecting them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m going to save Prescott Logistics,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders loosened slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Then I finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I&#39;m not going to save you by giving you control again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can&#39;t separate the two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo find out what else you haven&#39;t told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed again.<\/p>\n<p>Nina.<\/p>\n<p>Urgent.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside, Nina unlocked the passenger door before I reached the car.<\/p>\n<p>I got in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She handed me her tablet.<\/p>\n<p>A bank statement filled the screen.<\/p>\n<p>The account belonged to an entity called Northstar Ventures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother shell company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooks like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSixteen-point-two million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can&#39;t be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe traced deposits from Prescott Logistics, Bell Advisory, the holding company, and Ridgewell loan proceeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho controls Northstar?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nina swiped to the registration page.<\/p>\n<p>The listed manager was Paul Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>But the beneficiary declaration contained another name.<\/p>\n<p>Not Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Not Andrew.<\/p>\n<p>Not Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa Prescott.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at the townhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had just told me his sister knew only fragments.<\/p>\n<p>The records said something very different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSixteen million?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Daniel&#39;s missing fifteen million may not be missing at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nina nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She zoomed in on the most recent transaction.<\/p>\n<p>Two days before our anniversary dinner, Northstar Ventures had transferred twelve million dollars overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had spent the last hour telling me he was desperately trying to repay Ridgewell.<\/p>\n<p>But someone close to him had moved nearly the same amount beyond immediate reach.<\/p>\n<p>And either Daniel had lied to me again\u2014<\/p>\n<p>or the people helping him had begun stealing from him too.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=25678\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Melissa Claimed She Never Controlled Northstar, Until I Showed Her the Overseas Transfer Made Two Days Before Our Anniversary Dinner<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I met Daniel at the townhouse with Nina sitting in her car across the street.
