of truth is safest?

Every nerve in Ethan wanted to intervene.

Then he waited.

Carmen noticed too.

“Marcus.”

He looked up.

“You disappeared.”

He frowned.

“I’m right here.”

“Physically.”

Silence.

“What are you trying to figure out?”

Marcus looked at Denise.

Then Tasha.

“Who’s gonna get mad.”

Tasha’s face changed.

Denise looked away.

Carmen asked, “What if both of them are responsible for their own feelings?”

Marcus laughed nervously.

“Then nobody in my family knows the rules.”

Ethan almost smiled.

Neither did his.

Tasha said quietly, “I’ll be sad if you don’t come home.”

Marcus stiffened.

Carmen waited.

Tasha corrected herself.

“But you don’t have to fix that.”

Marcus looked at her.

Denise added, “And I’ll be sad when you spend more time with her.”

Marcus looked toward her.

“But that’s mine.”

His eyes filled.

Ethan felt his own chest tighten.

Not panic.

Recognition.

This was what David had wanted.

Not adults without feelings.

Adults who stopped assigning those feelings to children.

Marcus finally said, “I want two nights.”

They agreed to try.

No triumph.

No perfect reunion.

A plan.

Afterward, Ethan sat alone in his car.

He took Daniel’s watch from his pocket.

It had become a habit.

Then his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

For a second, he feared another anonymous message.

Instead:

Is this Ethan Carter? My name is Janet Moore. I used to work for Catherine Bell.

His pulse quickened.

A second message arrived.

I believe you received something I mailed.

Ethan stared.

The anonymous sender had just identified herself.

He could have called immediately.

Instead he put the phone down.

Breathed.

Then typed:

Why did you send it?

Janet replied:

Because your father asked me to, years ago.

Ethan’s hands went still.

Another message.

He left instructions that if you ever started looking into the old custody documents as an adult, I should give you one fact at a time.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then:

He said you would try to solve everything at once if we let you.

Despite himself, Ethan laughed.

Even dead, David had apparently known exactly how his son would search for answers.

But Janet’s final message erased the humor.

There is one last instruction.

He did not want you to receive it until you learned to leave at least one question unanswered.

Ethan looked at the anonymous letter inside his bag.

He had done exactly that.

And somewhere, waiting for him, was the final message David had deliberately withheld until his son proved he could live without certainty.

Click here to continue reading: PART 24: David’s Final Instruction Was Not Another Family Secret, but a Test Ethan Could Only Pass by Refusing to Chase the Past

Ethan’s first response surprised me.
