use of beneficiary privilege I\u2019ve seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Across the tarmac, the jet door remained open.<\/p>\n<p>Martin appeared at the top of the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>He saw us.<\/p>\n<p>Even from a distance, I knew the exact moment he understood Felix had grounded the plane.<\/p>\n<p>He descended slowly.<\/p>\n<p>No panic.<\/p>\n<p>No running.<\/p>\n<p>Martin did not behave like a man who believed he could lose.<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward us carrying a black leather case.<\/p>\n<p>The same kind Felix had carried in Caroline\u2019s surveillance reserves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo private accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor asset protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly this kind of chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost admired the man\u2019s ability to convert theft into administration.<\/p>\n<p>Police vehicles entered the tarmac.<\/p>\n<p>Martin remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive them the case,\u201d Thomas Voss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to speak with you regarding an incident at St. Agnes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy to cooperate through counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re asking you to remain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I detained?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot presently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I\u2019ll contact my attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward the terminal.<\/p>\n<p>Felix blocked him.<\/p>\n<p>The detective immediately said, \u201cMr. Blake, step aside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix did.<\/p>\n<p>Martin walked three steps.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Anonymous number.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>CHECK THE CASE HANDLE.<\/p>\n<p>I looked.<\/p>\n<p>A thin black cable ran from Martin\u2019s briefcase handle into his sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The detective looked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDead-man with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin said, \u201cThomas, enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>The detective called for technical support.<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked at Felix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne authorization. That\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can save the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can protect four hundred families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can keep your mother out of prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Martin saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think Nora will stay when this is over?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Martin kept going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Because he was using the truth as leverage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lose the trust, your company, your parents, your marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix looked at faint electronic chirp came from the case.<\/p>\n<p>Then smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Not fire.<\/p>\n<p>Internal chemical destruction.<\/p>\n<p>Martin dropped it.<\/p>\n<p>The detective grabbed him.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas lunged toward the case.<\/p>\n<p>I caught him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smoke curled from the seams.<\/p>\n<p>The technician arrived too late.<\/p>\n<p>Martin relinquishment papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSabine has the original codicil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective was listening now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice have St. Agnes records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you just admitted you instructed contractors to recover stolen records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw clenched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think destroying one case saves you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I met him, Martin looked old.<\/p>\n<p>Not weak.<\/p>\n<p>Not defeated.<\/p>\n<p>Simply old.<\/p>\n<p>A man who had spent decades believing information existed only where he stored it.<\/p>\n<p>Then the detective\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved toward Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now have a warrant regarding unlawful restraint, evidence tampering, and conspiracy connected to medical records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective reached for handcuffs.<\/p>\n<p>Martin turned to Felix one last time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still have time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFelix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The handcuffs closed.<\/p>\n<p>Martin stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you just destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered, \u201cThat\u2019s the first thing you\u2019ve said that makes me hopeful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They took him away.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, no one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Felix\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Harold.<\/p>\n<p>He answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We could hear shouting.<\/p>\n<p>Felix closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More shouting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I grounded it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Felix said something quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not choosing the company over people again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>His hand shook.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix gave a tired laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Anonymous number.<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled from exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>MARTIN IS NOT THE LAST PERSON WHO CAN AUTHORIZE THE PROGRAM.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Another message followed.<\/p>\n<p>THE BOARD CREATED A
