signatures appeared at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Forged.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose aren\u2019t ours,\u201d Felix said.<\/p>\n<p>Claire covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had them verified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin\u2019s attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement said we permanently relinquished all parental claims.<\/p>\n<p>But another document contradicted it.<\/p>\n<p>PRIVATE SUCCESSION CUSTODY RIDER.<\/p>\n<p>Claire leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It had been inserted behind the medical paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>I read aloud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the event of triggering beneficiary conditions, temporary gestational custodian shall transfer physical custody of resulting child to designated Blake household before first birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix took the page.<\/p>\n<p>His face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey planned to take him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire snatched the document back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one ever told me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan was never temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was my son before he was born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep your voice down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She immediately covered her INTERFERENCE.<\/p>\n<p>M.B.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Blake.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret stopped them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix took the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour dead grandmother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire blinked.<\/p>\n<p>I almost envied her.<\/p>\n<p>She had entered this story late enough to still be surprised by individual impossibilities.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>CHECK THE LAST PAGE.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten note had been clipped to the back.<\/p>\n<p>Do not transfer child. Original consent invalid. Biological mother unaware. F.B. also uninformed. Any removal would constitute fraud and potential kidnapping.<\/p>\n<p>Initials:<\/p>\n<p>M.B.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had known.<\/p>\n<p>She had discovered Evan.<\/p>\n<p>She had stopped the transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Felix sat down heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe saved him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom being brought to us without our knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had not returned our child.<\/p>\n<p>She had protected him from becoming another trust asset.<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t she tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe protecting you required keeping you outside the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t she tell Nora?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Felix did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she still needed Nora.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>His face was bleak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo destroy the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Even Margaret\u2019s protection had layers.<\/p>\n<p>Claire removed another envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis came just before Evan\u2019s first birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single typed page.<\/p>\n<p>Your placement is secure. Do not respond to future inquiries regarding Blake family interests.
