discovered them.”

Margaret leaned forward.

“What bank?”

“Meridian.”

The three-million-dollar lender.

Of course.

“He wanted Claire to believe Meridian thought she committed fraud?” Margaret asked.

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

Mark’s shame deepened.

“I was supposed to tell her the easiest way to protect the house was signing the transfer agreement.”

I stared at him.

The sophistication of the lie stunned me.

The forged transactions created guilt.

The fake email created intent.

Denise created a witness.

The lender created urgency.

The transfer agreement created access to the house.

And Mark, my husband, would have presented himself as the person rescuing me.

“You were going to save me from the crime you staged.”

He whispered, “Yes.”

I turned away.

For several seconds, I could not look at anyone.

That was worse than the money.

Worse than Northstar.

Worse than Denise.

He had planned to make me afraid enough to run toward him.

Trust him.

Thank him.

Sign whatever he put in front of me.

Margaret said my name quietly.

I held up one hand.

“I’m fine.”

I wasn’t.

But I needed to continue.

“What happened to the plan?”

Mark answered.

“You agreed to leave too easily.”

I turned back.

“What?”

“Richard expected you to argue. He thought I could use the fight later.”

“For what?”

“To show the marriage was unstable.”

“But I just left.”

“Yes.”

“And went to Harbor House.”

“Yes.”

“Then ended up on television.”

Mark almost smiled from the absurdity.

“Yes.”

My interview had ruined their script.

When I appeared calm on television, helping other people without mentioning Mark, their portrait of the volatile, unstable wife became harder to sell.

“When did Richard know?”

“Immediately.”

“How?”

“He called me while the segment was airing.”

“What did he say?”

“That I had lost control.”

The phrase irritated me.

He had lost control.

Not of me.

Of the story.

“What did he order you to do?”

“Get you home.”

That explained Mark’s sudden change.

Come home.

Straighten this out.

I had thought he wanted to repair appearances for Sophie and Evan.

No.

Richard wanted the plan back on schedule.

“I refused.”

“Yes.”

“What happened next?”

“He told me to use the confession.”

“I didn’t know what he meant.”

“The envelope.”

“I guess.”

Margaret asked, “When did you receive the envelope?”

“I didn’t.”

“It was in your briefcase.”

“I know.”

“Who had access?”

Mark thought.

“My car was at Richard’s office yesterday afternoon.”

“Why?”

“I left it there and took his driver to a meeting.”

“Someone could have placed it inside?”

“Yes.”

“Was the briefcase locked?”

“No.”

Ortiz made a note.

That did not prove Mark innocent.

But it explained his fear.

“What is the other version?” I asked.

Mark shook his head.

“I still don’t know.”

“Richard’s recording says, ‘If she won’t sign, we use the other version.’”

“I know.”

“What did you think that meant?”

“Maybe divorce.”

“Maybe?”

“I don’t know.”

I stared at him.

“Was there ever any discussion of hurting me?”

“No.”

He answered instantly.

“Any accident?”

“No.”

“Any plan involving my little.

Then Ortiz asked, “Did Richard know Claire would be at Harbor House?”

“After the news segment.”

“Did he know she intended to stay overnight?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you tell him?”

“No.”

Ortiz looked at the message.

YOU FIX THIS TODAY OR CLAIRE TAKES THE FALL.

Then at the parked-car report.

“We need to treat Richard carefully.”

Margaret asked, “Meaning?”

“Meaning I don’t have evidence of a violent conspiracy.”

His wording mattered.

“But?”

“But I have financial documents, a threat tied to framing Claire, and testimony that he asked about insurance while pursuing her assets.”

He closed his notebook.

“That is enough to stop improvising.”

Mark looked toward the hallway.

“What happens now?”

“We preserve records.”

“What about Richard?”

“We speak to him.”

Mark laughed bitterly.

“He’ll deny everything.”

“Most people do.”

“He’ll delete records.”

“That’s why your laptop matters.”

Mark became quiet.

Ortiz watched him.

“There’s something else.”

Mark looked up.

“What?”

“You haven’t told us everything.”

Mark’s face tightened.

“What makes you say that?”

“Because men who confess this much usually do it for one of two reasons.”

Ortiz spoke calmly.

“They suddenly develop a conscience, or they know we’re about to discover something worse.”

Mark said nothing.

“Which one are you?”

His eyes moved toward me.

I understood before he spoke.

“There’s another account.”

Margaret leaned forward.

“Whose?”

“Claire’s.”

My heart began pounding.

“I only have three personal accounts.”

“This isn’t one much?”

Mark rubbed both palms against his trousers.

“About six hundred thousand.”

The exact amount he wanted from my tightened.

“What investors?”

“Northstar investors.”

Margaret spoke slowly.

“So funds from Northstar were placed in an account under Claire Bennett’s identity.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make it appear she controlled part of the money.”

The answer completed the shape of the trap.

Forty-eight thousand moved from my joint account to Harbor House.

Six hundred thousand from investors moved into a hidden account in my name.

Fake emails.

A confession.

Witnesses.

An impending divorce.

If Northstar collapsed, investigators might see me not as a victim but as someone receiving or diverting funds.

“Did you know about that account when it was opened?” I asked.

Mark did not answer.

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

The single syllable destroyed something final.

I nodded slowly.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And said nothing.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Richard said it would never matter if we stabilized the company.”

I laughed softly.

“You believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

There it was.

Not deception.

Not ignorance.

Choice.

Mark had repeatedly chosen the explanation that allowed him to continue.

I felt no rage this time.

Only distance.

“You need to understand something.”

He looked at me.

“Our marriage didn’t end yesterday.”

His eyes reddened.

“It ended every time you learned one of these things and decided I didn’t deserve to know.”

He lowered his head.

I turned to Ortiz.

“How do we find the account?”

He already had his phone out.

“With the information Mark gives us.”

Mark nodded.

“I have the account number.”

Margaret stared at him.

“You memorized it?”

“No.”

He reached into his coat.

Every officer in the room became alert.

Mark stopped.

“Paper.”

Ortiz nodded.

Mark slowly removed his wallet.

Behind an old insurance card was a folded slip.

Account number.

Routing number.

Online access code.

Margaret looked at him.

“You carried this with you?”

“I was supposed to transfer the money tomorrow.”

My heart stopped.

“To where?”

“Northstar.”

“Why?”

“To show repayment.”

“Repayment of what?”

“The investor money.”

Ortiz frowned.

“If the money moved from investors into an account in Claire’s name, then back to Northstar, it could look like—”

“She invested it,” Margaret finished.

Mark nodded.

The trap had one more layer.

Make it appear I received investor funds personally.

Then make it appear I chose to put them into Northstar.

If the company failed, I could be portrayed as participant rather than victim.

“Why tomorrow?”

“Year-end reporting.”

The precision was horrifying.

December 26.

One transfer.

A few documents.

By January, my financial identity would be tangled in a collapsing company.

“What stopped you?” I asked.

Mark looked at me.

“You.”

“I didn’t know any of this.”

“You went on television.”

I frowned.

“I still don’t understand.”

“Richard saw you.”

“So?”

“He realized too many people could place you at Harbor House.”

Margaret understood first.

“The transfer would occur while Claire was publicly documented somewhere else.”

“Yes.”

“That would weaken any claim she personally initiated it.”

“Yes.”

My accidental interview had done more than expose Mark’s Christmas lie.

It had created a timestamp.

Witnesses.

Video.

A record of where I was while someone else accessed accounts in my name.

The broken pipe had saved more than Christmas beds.

It might have saved me from becoming the easiest person to blame.

Ortiz took the account information.

“I’m contacting the bank.”

Mark said, “There’s more.”

I almost wanted him to stop.

No one did.

“The account requires a second authorization for transfers above one hundred thousand.”

“Whose?”

“Linda Carver.”

Richard’s assistant.

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“So Linda is directly tied to the account.”

“Yes.”

“And she knows it’s in Claire’s name?”

“Yes.”

“Then she isn’t just preparing documents.”

“No.”

Ortiz stood.

“I need her location.”

Mark gave him Richard’s office address.

Then another.

“Linda has an apartment in Lincoln Park.”

Ortiz stepped into the hallway to make calls.

Mark and I were left with Margaret.

For several seconds, none of us spoke.

Then Mark said, “I’ll testify.”

I looked at him.

“Against Richard.”

Margaret answered before I could.

“That is a conversation you have with your own attorney.”

“I don’t care.”

“You should.”

“I’m done protecting him.”

I studied his face.

“Why now?”

He looked at me.

“Because I finally understand he planned for me to take the fall too.”

There it was.

Not courage.

Not love.

Self-preservation.

I appreciated the honesty.

Mark continued.

“If the documents point to you and I’m the owner of Northstar on paper, Richard walks away.”

Margaret said, “Possibly.”

“He made both of us disposable.”

I looked at him.

“No, Mark.”

He stopped.

“Richard may have used you.”

I kept my voice calm.

“But you volunteered me.”

His face broke.

He nodded once.

“Yes.”

Before anything else could be said, Ortiz returned.

He was no longer calm.

“What happened?” Margaret asked.

“First Continental confirmed the account exists.”

My pulse jumped.

“Can they freeze it?”

“They’re reviewing an emergency fraud hold.”

“And Linda?”

Ortiz looked at Mark.

“She isn’t at home.”

“Office?”

“No.”

“Where is she?”

“We don’t know.”

Then he turned to me.

“But approximately twenty minutes ago, someone attempted to initiate the six-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer.”

I stared at him.

“From the account in my name?”

“Yes.”

“To Northstar?”

“No.”

That answer frightened me more.

“Where?”

Ortiz glanced at his notes.

“An offshore account.”

Mark went pale.

“Richard.”

Ortiz nodded slowly.

“Someone just tried to move the money out of reach.”

My phone vibrated on the table.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

A message appeared.

CLAIRE, MARK HAS LIED TO YOU ABOUT EVERYTHING.

A second message followed.

IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH, COME ALONE.

Then a photograph loaded.

Richard Vale stood inside my house.

Behind him was the Christmas tree I had decorated.

And in his hand was my father’s original trust document.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Richard Was Standing Inside My House With the One Document He Needed, but the
