Did Arthur hold reunions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire touched my arm.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled away.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret waited until I sat again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour sister\u2019s name is Rachel Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I repeated it silently.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lives in Oregon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does she want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody wants something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at me with an expression that reminded me strangely of Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. They don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated the certainty in her voice.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that Rachel discovered me while settling Thomas\u2019s estate.<\/p>\n<p>He had kept a separate folder labeled David.<\/p>\n<p>Photos.<\/p>\n<p>School clippings.<\/p>\n<p>Copies of letters.<\/p>\n<p>Financial instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel asked Margaret to find me.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret refused at first.<\/p>\n<p>Then she contacted made the truth harder.<\/p>\n<p>There would be no reunion.<\/p>\n<p>No conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Only absence.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur kept delaying.<\/p>\n<p>The explanation sounded painfully familiar.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my mother\u2019s unopened letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Rachel ever come here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at the metal box.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer two hours later.<\/p>\n<p>When I came back, he was waiting outside.<\/p>\n<p>He said the doctor was pleased.<\/p>\n<p>There had been no appointment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used me as his driver to meet my sister?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s face reddened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought if the meeting went badly he could protect you from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtect me from what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer cut through my anger.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel wanted to meet me.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said no.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he distrusted her.<\/p>\n<p>Because he believed the decision belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>That sounded noble until I remembered he never gave me the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret pulled out another envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had written me a letter after meeting Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>She asked him to deliver it whenever he believed the time was right.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time was never right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret handed it to me.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s handwriting was plain and careful.<\/p>\n<p>She introduced herself without calling herself my sister.<\/p>\n<p>She explained who Thomas was.<\/p>\n<p>She said she grew up knowing she had an older brother somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas never hid it from her mother.<\/p>\n<p>He did not romanticize the past.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted he failed to fight harder for a relationship with me.<\/p>\n<p>He feared that phone number.<\/p>\n<p>If I ever wanted to call.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was dated three years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Claire asked, \u201cAre you going to call her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The number might not even work.<\/p>\n<p>I typed it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped before pressing the button.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The thing I had spent all day condemning in other people.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of changing what I knew.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of making a stranger real.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of finding out Thomas was not the father I wanted him to be.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of liking Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of losing her after one conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had been afraid too.<\/p>\n<p>That did not excuse him.<\/p>\n<p>But for the first time, I understood the temptation.<\/p>\n<p>Noah said quietly, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to call now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I wait twenty years, punch me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Lily almost did.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret reached into the box again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>She produced a small recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Not Arthur\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>A newer one.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur asked me to record our last meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur knew he was dying.<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Not clearly.<\/p>\n<p>His doctor had said his heart was weakening, but Arthur refused aggressive treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Claire knew that much.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>I just pretended time was still normal.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s voice filled the room again.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded tired.<\/p>\n<p>He told Margaret he had made a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>He should have given me Rachel\u2019s letter immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur laughed weakly.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said something unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>He had met Rachel again.<\/p>\n<p>Not three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Six weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>The same week Mark secretly visited him.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur told Margaret he wanted Rachel to know that the truth was finally coming out.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel asked whether she should come to our house.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said no.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>Then he told her I was stubborn.<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The sound of a woman I had never met came through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>My sister\u2019s laugh.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded like mine.<\/p>\n<p>Claire heard it too.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>On the recording, Rachel said she document from the bottom of the box.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Hale\u2019s estate had contained far more than the small sums Arthur transferred to us.<\/p>\n<p>The construction company had been sold.<\/p>\n<p>Land had appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>Investments had grown.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas created a trust for me.<\/p>\n<p>A substantial one.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at Claire.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of this month, approximately two-point-four million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded ugly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Arthur\u2019s three million isn\u2019t enough?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Apparently dead fathers are lining up to make me rich.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat money has been untouched for almost fifteen years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Arthur refused to authorize distribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe controlled it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was one of the trustees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became cold.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur hadn\u2019t merely hidden my paternity.<\/p>\n<p>He had controlled money left to me by the father I never knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat right did he have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret answered carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas gave Margaret and Arthur discretionary authority until you were informed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur wasn\u2019t supposed to wait fifteen years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe kept two million dollars from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered my name.<\/p>\n<p>I barely heard her.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger suddenly looked different.<\/p>\n<p>The anonymous mortgage help.<\/p>\n<p>The medical bills.<\/p>\n<p>The school expenses.<\/p>\n<p>How much of it had come from Thomas\u2019s trust?<\/p>\n<p>How much had Arthur decided I deserved?<\/p>\n<p>My father-in-law had spent decades secretly managing two fortunes.<\/p>\n<p>His.<\/p>\n<p>And mine.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret placed the trust document on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost told her to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix weeks ago, Arthur signed papers removing himself as trustee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho replaced him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could answer, a car pulled into the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>None of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked through the window.<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A woman stepped out of the car.<\/p>\n<p>She was tall, dark-haired, perhaps five years younger than me.<\/p>\n<p>Even through rain-streaked glass, I recognized my own face in hers.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Hale walked toward my house.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time in my life, someone from my father\u2019s
