Giving Jason enough money to erase whatever he did and pretending our marriage is fine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood there another moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then he walked out.<\/p>\n<p>I waited until I heard the front door close.<\/p>\n<p>After checking the lock, I returned upstairs and opened Mom\u2019s envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The letter inside was older than the others.<\/p>\n<p>She had written it years before her death.<\/p>\n<p>Her message was careful: do not surrender control because someone insists urgency makes questions dangerous. Do not confuse another person\u2019s emergency with your obligation.
