with him.

I looked at her.

“You’re going to see him.”

She flinched.

“That’s not your decision.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“It’s yours.”

She looked outside.

Dawn was beginning to lighten the trees.

“What if he hates me?”

“He already does sometimes.”

Pain crossed her face.

“That’s supposed to help?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because he can hate you and still want you there.”

Rebecca started crying.

Quietly.

Then my phone rang.

Aaron.

I answered.

“Is she alive?”

I looked at Rebecca.

“Yes.”

“Is she with you?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then:

“Ask her if she’s coming.”

I held the phone out.

Rebecca did not take it.

Not immediately.

Her hand trembled.

Then she did.

“Aaron?”

I watched her face change when he answered.

Whatever he said made her close her eyes.

“I know,” she whispered.

Then:

“I’m coming.”

She listened.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m not disappearing this time.”

Another pause.

“I promise.”

Her face crumpled.

“I know promises don’t mean much yet.”

She turned away from us.

“But I’ll show you.”

That was better.

Not a vow.

A behavior.

When Rebecca ended the call, Eleanor’s phone buzzed with an urgent hospital update.

Michael had reached surgery.

Alive.

Barely.

The archive remained suspended.

Twenty-four hours before the system demanded another decision.

We had gained time.

Then Malik approached carrying a sealed evidence bag from the cabin.

Inside was a single handwritten page found in Martin’s pocket.

“What is it?”

He turned it toward us.

A list.

Names.

Payment amounts.

Dates.

At the bottom, one final entry.

E. VANCE — FINAL LIABILITY TRANSFER.

Beside it:

ALL HISTORICAL OPERATIONS TO BE ATTRIBUTED UPON ARCHIVE RELEASE.

I stared.

Martin’s plan was exactly what Charles predicted.

Release selected evidence arranged to make Edward appear responsible for everything.

Not only his real crimes.

All of it.

Rebecca looked at the page.

“He was going to bury the whole system inside Edward.”

Edward had done enough.

He did not need invented crimes added.

Truth mattered even when it benefited someone who hurt me.

Then Eleanor turned the page over.

On the back, Martin had written another name.

LAUREN VANCE.

Below it:

IF E. FAILS, SPOUSE BECOMES PUBLIC NARRATIVE.

My skin went cold.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor read the next line.

FINANCIAL MOTIVE / CUSTODY INSTABILITY / CONSPIRACY WITH R.H.

I understood.

If Martin could not blame Edward for everything, he planned to blame me.

The same language Edward had prepared.

Unstable.

Financial motive.

Custody.

Paranoia.

Only expanded.

Martin did not merely control evidence.

He prepared replacement villains.

Rebecca looked at me.

“That’s why you were brought in.”

Not just as a key.

As a contingency.

If Edward became unusable, I could become the story.

I folded my arms against the cold.

Twenty-four hours remained before the archive suspension ended.

And when it reopened, we would have to decide something harder than whether to expose the truth.

We would have to decide how to release it without letting one more powerful person decide whose life the truth was allowed to destroy.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: The Twenty-Four-Hour Suspension Forced Us to Decide Who Could See the Archive Without Letting Its Victims Become Evidence Again

The tactical team stopped our vehicle half a mile from the cabin.
