Because every decision has Lauren\u2019s signature on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the man I had trusted with my unconscious body after surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was never about equality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what it was about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he meant to frighten me.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the statement lodged in my mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>Sylvia caught his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook her off.<\/p>\n<p>Then Eleanor appeared from the courthouse door holding her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLauren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in her expression stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe school called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every thought in my head vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanny\u2019s not there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.
