beside the open drawer holding Ruth’s ledger.

He pulled out a lighter.

“No!”

I lunged.

Frank caught my coat.

Too weak to stop me completely.

Howe flicked the flame.

Before it touched the paper, Voss moved.

He struck Howe’s wrist.

The lighter fell.

Howe stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

Michael Voss looked at Ruth’s ledger.

At my name.

At Evelyn’s.

Aaron’s.

His own.

“You told me my whole life that everyone else stole my family.”

“They did.”

“No.”

His voice shook.

“You kept me hidden because hidden made me useful.”

Howe’s face changed.

There it was.

The first crack in his certainty.

Voss took the ledger.

Then handed it to me.

“I want proof I exist.”

“You’ll have it.”

“I want my share.”

“That gets decided legally.”

He looked disappointed.

But not enraged.

Good.

Reality instead of another promise.

Reed entered with agents.

Howe was arrested.

Leonard received medical care under guard.

Voss surrendered.

Before agents took him, he looked at Frank.

“I did poison you.”

Frank nodded.

“I know.”

“I told myself I wasn’t killing you.”

“That sounds familiar.”

Voss frowned.

Frank looked at me.

“So does telling yourself control is protection.”

He finally understood why I kept saying it.

Maybe.

As officers cleared the basement, Joanna arrived.

She examined Ruth’s ledger.

Then turned to the vault.

Three locks remained.

One opened.

Two untouched.

But now the ledger referenced a fourth compartment.

Not visible.

A line in Ruth’s handwriting gave instructions.

WHEN ALL FOUR CHILDREN ARE KNOWN, OPEN THE FLOOR.

We looked down.

At the center of the vault corridor sat a square brass plate.

Four keyholes.

Not three.

One for each of Ruth’s children.

Me.

Evelyn.

Aaron.

Michael.

Whatever Ruth had hidden beneath the Bell paper mill could only be opened by all four of us together.

And beneath the instruction she had written one final warning.

DO NOT OPEN UNTIL YOU KNOW WHO KILLED ME.

I stared at the words.

Every record we had treated Ruth Hale as a woman who died in 1984.

Quietly.

Naturally.

But Ruth herself had apparently known death might come differently.

I looked at Michael.

Then Frank.

Then Gerald Howe being led away.

“What happened to Ruth?”

Howe stopped walking.

He turned.

For the first time all evening, fear appeared on his face.

Not fear for himself.

Fear of the answer.

“She didn’t die in 1984.”

The room went still.

“How do you know?”

Howe looked at Michael.

“Because I saw her in 1987.”

The year my father was murdered.

Three years after Ruth’s supposed death.

I stepped closer.

“When?”

“The night before the Harper crash.”

My skin went cold.

“Where?”

Howe looked at the brass plate beneath our feet.

“Right here.”

<a
