Evelyn used to cover her ears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape ended with coordinates disguised as numbers from the song\u2019s sheet music.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna worked them out.<\/p>\n<p>A place twenty miles south.<\/p>\n<p>Old Harper property.<\/p>\n<p>My grandparents had owned an abandoned orchard there.<\/p>\n<p>Reed immediately called a second team.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret expects the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe give her a copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot if Diane takes it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all turned.<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood Frank\u2019s test suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>Not the inheritance condition.<\/p>\n<p>The deeper one.<\/p>\n<p>He had spent years waiting for Diane to choose what kind of daughter she would become when money, fear, and Margaret pulled in opposite directions.<\/p>\n<p>Frank had given me seventy-two hours to decide whether to restore her inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps he had known those seventy-two hours would contain exactly this choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can get close to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll expect me to side with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you want me to lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Not obedience.<\/p>\n<p>Choice.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at the steel box.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the bullet hole in Joanna\u2019s hood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy whole life, Dad told me that courage usually feels like doing something stupid while wishing someone else would do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite myself, I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said that to you too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time I was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed objected immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Too dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Too unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p>No time to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>Diane listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cMy mother has Evelyn because of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe found your family through me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat part may be true. But Margaret made the choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to make a different one now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove back toward town.<\/p>\n<p>On the way, police confirmed the shooter had escaped.<\/p>\n<p>Tire tracks suggested an ATV.<\/p>\n<p>No identification.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret was not working alone.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Leonard Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps someone else from the financial network.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Frank.<\/p>\n<p>That thought hurt.<\/p>\n<p>I still did not know what Frank\u2019s role had been.<\/p>\n<p>Was he hiding from Margaret?<\/p>\n<p>Working with her?<\/p>\n<p>Pretending to?<\/p>\n<p>Why allow me to believe he had died?<\/p>\n<p>Why let his children think the same?<\/p>\n<p>Why put Jonathan Hale\u2019s body in his casket?<\/p>\n<p>Every answer opened three questions.<\/p>\n<p>At the police command post, detectives fitted Diane with a transmitter.<\/p>\n<p>A second steel box was prepared.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were copies of Helen\u2019s letters and blank financial papers.<\/p>\n<p>Enough to look convincing during a hurried inspection.<\/p>\n<p>The original remained locked elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret instructed Diane by text to come alone to the ferry landing.<\/p>\n<p>No police.<\/p>\n<p>No Eileen.<\/p>\n<p>Bring the box.<\/p>\n<p>Diane read the message twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then she handed me her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this goes wrong\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to say it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>For nineteen years, she had rarely looked at me without some layer of suspicion.<\/p>\n<p>Now there was none.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this goes wrong,\u201d she continued, \u201cDad was right about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is a terrible apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A startled laugh escaped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry again when we have more time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hugged me.<\/p>\n<p>I almost did not respond.<\/p>\n<p>Then I wrapped my arms around her.<\/p>\n<p>It was awkward.<\/p>\n<p>Late.<\/p>\n<p>Real.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry landing had been abandoned for years.<\/p>\n<p>Reed\u2019s team positioned itself beyond the tree line.<\/p>\n<p>I watched through binoculars from a surveillance van.<\/p>\n<p>Diane walked onto the old concrete dock carrying the steel box.<\/p>\n<p>Water slapped beneath rotten pilings.<\/p>\n<p>Five minutes passed.<\/p>\n<p>Then a dark sedan appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>Even from a distance, I could see the resemblance to Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Same chin.<\/p>\n<p>Same shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Same way of tilting her head when suspicious.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn sat in the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p>Hands bound.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret approached Diane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Eileen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack in town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret studied her.<\/p>\n<p>Then embraced her.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stood stiffly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you would come back to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came for Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer name is Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret opened the box.<\/p>\n<p>She skimmed the papers.<\/p>\n<p>Too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>Diane said, \u201cEverything is a copy now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret slapped her.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the surveillance van, Reed raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>Wait.<\/p>\n<p>Diane did not react.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret gripped her chin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the originals?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what I need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know about the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know about Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad found everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank found what I wanted him to find.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>Diane said, \u201cHe\u2019s alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s expression did not change.<\/p>\n<p>That told us enough.<\/p>\n<p>She knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>Then movement appeared behind the sedan.<\/p>\n<p>A man stepped into view.<\/p>\n<p>Tall.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball cap.<\/p>\n<p>The same posture as the storage footage.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Frank.<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTold you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank stood beside her.<\/p>\n<p>No cane.<\/p>\n<p>No visible weakness.<\/p>\n<p>Yet he had supposedly been dying from cancer days earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Diane whispered, \u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo exactly what I tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret turned.<\/p>\n<p>Too late.<\/p>\n<p>Frank seized her wrist.<\/p>\n<p>The gun in her hand fell onto the dock.<\/p>\n<p>Reed shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Officers surged from both sides.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret screamed.<\/p>\n<p>A second gunshot exploded from the tree line.<\/p>\n<p>Frank spun and fell.<\/p>\n<p>I was out of the van before anyone could stop me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another shot.<\/p>\n<p>Officers returned fire.<\/p>\n<p>Someone crashed through brush.<\/p>\n<p>I ran toward the dock.<\/p>\n<p>Frank lay on his side, blood spreading across his shirt.<\/p>\n<p>Diane knelt beside him.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret was pinned face-down by two officers.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn screamed from the car.<\/p>\n<p>I reached Frank.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to strike him.<\/p>\n<p>Kiss him.<\/p>\n<p>Save him.<\/p>\n<p>Demand answers.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I pressed both hands against the wound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou absolute bastard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A faint smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds more like you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t you dare die now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already tried that once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paramedics ran toward us.<\/p>\n<p>Frank reached weakly into his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>He pressed a key into my palm.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>Iron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe orchard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my fingers around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Margaret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes shifted toward Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then his grip loosened.<\/p>\n<p>Paramedics moved me aside.<\/p>\n<p>As they cut open his shirt, I saw something that made me stop.<\/p>\n<p>There was no cancer port.<\/p>\n<p>No surgical scar where his doctors had operated months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Reed.<\/p>\n<p>He saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>The man on the dock had Frank\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s memories.<\/p>\n<p>But his body did not carry the medical history of the husband I had nursed.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the key.<\/p>\n<p>And understood that even after finding Frank alive, I still
