Diane and I were in the back.<\/p>\n<p>Ross remained in town with Aaron after detectives asked him to provide documents concerning the shell companies.<\/p>\n<p>He had not argued.<\/p>\n<p>That alone told me how frightened he was.<\/p>\n<p>The original cabin no longer existed.<\/p>\n<p>Fire had taken most of it.<\/p>\n<p>A replacement structure had been built farther upslope, but county records preserved the foundation outline of the old one.<\/p>\n<p>Reed found the place using coordinates from Frank\u2019s storage notes.<\/p>\n<p>We stood among wet leaves and blackened stones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is where I was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane asked.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the lake.<\/p>\n<p>Something deep inside me recognized the slope.<\/p>\n<p>Memory did not return as a scene.<\/p>\n<p>Only sensations.<\/p>\n<p>Smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Someone screaming.<\/p>\n<p>Cold water around my ankles.<\/p>\n<p>A child\u2019s hand gripping mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joanna unfolded a copy of Frank\u2019s note.<\/p>\n<p>FIND WHAT HELEN LEFT AT CRESCENT LAKE.<\/p>\n<p>No other instruction.<\/p>\n<p>We searched the ruined foundation.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly an hour, nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Diane called from behind a broken chimney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s metal here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beneath six inches of soil sat an old steel box.<\/p>\n<p>The lock had rusted almost through.<\/p>\n<p>Reed photographed it before opening.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, sealed in waxed cloth, were letters.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens.<\/p>\n<p>All addressed to my mother.<\/p>\n<p>Several were from Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>The oldest dated to 1977.<\/p>\n<p>The first letters sounded intimate.<\/p>\n<p>Not romantic.<\/p>\n<p>Desperate.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret described Thomas Vale\u2019s violence.<\/p>\n<p>Broken ribs.<\/p>\n<p>Threats.<\/p>\n<p>His obsession with controlling their daughter.<\/p>\n<p>She begged Helen for help disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>Then the letters changed.<\/p>\n<p>By early 1978, Margaret was talking about another baby.<\/p>\n<p>A child Thomas had fathered with someone else.<\/p>\n<p>A woman named Ruth Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJonathan?\u201d Diane asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly a relative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Hale was apparently Jonathan Hale\u2019s younger sister.<\/p>\n<p>She had become involved with Thomas Vale.<\/p>\n<p>When she became pregnant, he denied responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Months after the birth, Ruth disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>The infant went to Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Not legally.<\/p>\n<p>Quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s reply, preserved as a carbon copy, was blunt.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot hide one child by stealing another.<\/p>\n<p>Diane sat down hard on the ruined foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We found the answer three letters later.<\/p>\n<p>A baby girl named Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Born August 1976.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately two years younger than Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had kept Rebecca for almost a year.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas learned.<\/p>\n<p>He threatened to take both girls.<\/p>\n<p>That was why Margaret planned to vanish.<\/p>\n<p>Helen agreed to help only if Rebecca was returned to Ruth\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>The cabin meeting at Crescent Lake was supposed to accomplish that.<\/p>\n<p>Helen would bring someone from the Hale family.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret would bring Diane and Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Thomas followed them.<\/p>\n<p>The fire began during the confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>Then came a statement written by my mother and never delivered.<\/p>\n<p>I read it aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas came through the kitchen carrying gasoline. Margaret had Diana. I had Eileen. Rebecca was asleep in the back room. When Thomas struck Margaret, Diana ran. Eileen followed her.<\/p>\n<p>My voice weakened.<\/p>\n<p>The child\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>The red coat.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Two girls running through smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Helen wrote that she went back for Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>A section of the ceiling collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas disappeared in the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret escaped outside.<\/p>\n<p>But another woman arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s biological mother.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth took the baby.<\/p>\n<p>That should have ended it.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Because Margaret told police that Diana had vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Diana had not vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Helen had hidden her temporarily, exactly as Reed suspected.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret used the supposed disappearance to sever every trace tying Diana to Thomas Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Then she later reclaimed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo where does Rebecca fit?\u201d Diane asked.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>My mother knew Margaret would eventually search for Ruth and the baby.<\/p>\n<p>So she arranged for Ruth and Rebecca to enter protective relocation using assistance from an attorney.<\/p>\n<p>A name had been written in the margin.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>That connected the families years before Frank claimed he ever met Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>I felt anger prick through me.<\/p>\n<p>Another lie.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Frank had not known at first.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe his father had hidden it.<\/p>\n<p>But by the time Frank died\u2014or pretended to\u2014he knew.<\/p>\n<p>Reed carefully opened the final packet.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were three photographs.<\/p>\n<p>The first showed baby Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Dark hair.<\/p>\n<p>Round cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>A birthmark beneath her right ear.<\/p>\n<p>The second had been taken perhaps twelve years later.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stood beside a woman I recognized instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>My sister.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s your sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn was six years younger than me.<\/p>\n<p>My parents had always told me she was born after years of infertility.<\/p>\n<p>Except now the dates did not fit.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca would have been two when my parents supposedly brought newborn Evelyn home.<\/p>\n<p>Unless\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t my parents\u2019 biological daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice sounded far away.<\/p>\n<p>The third photograph confirmed it.<\/p>\n<p>Helen and my father stood outside our childhood home.<\/p>\n<p>Between them, four-year-old Rebecca smiled at the camera.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, my mother had written:<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s first day with us. May Margaret never find her.<\/p>\n<p>Diane covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s words returned.<\/p>\n<p>Helen saved two children.<\/p>\n<p>Diane.<\/p>\n<p>And Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>My sister.<\/p>\n<p>My little sister had been born Rebecca Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna said, \u201cIf Thomas Vale was Rebecca\u2019s father, then Evelyn and Diane share a biological father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared toward the lake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Evelyn is my half sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family tree twisted into shapes none of us had imagined.<\/p>\n<p>Then another fact struck me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret thinks the red folder proves Helen betrayed her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the folder contains records showing Helen helped relocate Rebecca, Margaret may believe Helen stole the child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t steal her. Ruth took her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Margaret may not know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or may have refused to believe it.<\/p>\n<p>We packed the documents and headed back toward the cars.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway up the trail, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I had left her in town hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p>She knew none of this.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s someone here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says her name is Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane heard and turned white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLock yourself in a room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s already inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn, listen to me\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s voice came through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello, Eileen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Helen took from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the steel box in Reed\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>A dangerous silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret whispered, \u201cSo Frank found that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn is not yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was raised in your house because of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Because Ruth Hale entrusted her to people who protected her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still believe Helen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have her letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetters can lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo can mothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret heard the silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Diana with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s tone changed.<\/p>\n<p>Warm.<\/p>\n<p>Manipulative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy beautiful girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane\u2019s face twisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t call me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did everything for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept you alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou drugged me with fear for seven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think Frank loved you more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the letters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe chose me when he didn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That was the first moment I saw Diane free herself from her.<\/p>\n<p>Then Evelyn cried out.<\/p>\n<p>A sharp, frightened sound.<\/p>\n<p>I shouted her name.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring me Helen\u2019s box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old ferry landing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet Evelyn go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I have the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed was already signaling officers.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd don\u2019t bring Malcolm Reed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know he\u2019s here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind us, a branch snapped.<\/p>\n<p>Reed turned.<\/p>\n<p>A rifle shot cracked through the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Bark exploded from the trunk beside him.<\/p>\n<p>We dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Diane screamed.<\/p>\n<p>Another shot struck the hood of Joanna\u2019s car.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had followed us.<\/p>\n<p>Reed drew his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay down!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps moved through the brush.<\/p>\n<p>Fast.<\/p>\n<p>Retreating.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna crawled behind a stone wall.<\/p>\n<p>Diane clung to the steel box.<\/p>\n<p>Then she noticed something beneath the waxed cloth.<\/p>\n<p>A small cassette recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>Battery-powered.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had labeled one tape.<\/p>\n<p>FOR EILEEN AND REBECCA IF MARGARET RETURNS.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had my sister.<\/p>\n<p>Someone with a rifle knew our location.<\/p>\n<p>And in Diane\u2019s shaking hands rested my mother\u2019s voice, recorded decades earlier for the day we finally learned the truth.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=24873\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: My Mother\u2019s Voice Revealed Why Margaret Needed Evelyn Alive, While Diane Made the First Choice Frank Had Been Waiting For<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We reached Crescent Lake shortly after sunrise.
