He identified himself, gave his badge number, explained that there was reason to question the identity of the man buried that morning, and asked that no one touch the burial site until law enforcement arrived.<\/p>\n<p>There was a long silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then the funeral director said, \u201cMr. Mercer was positively identified by his wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every person in the storage office looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI identified his face,\u201d I said. \u201cOr what I thought was his face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words sounded impossible even as I spoke them.<\/p>\n<p>Frank had died at home.<\/p>\n<p>I had been beside him.<\/p>\n<p>I had watched his breathing slow.<\/p>\n<p>I had rested my fingers against his neck when I could no longer feel a pulse.<\/p>\n<p>The hospice nurse had arrived forty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>There should have been no uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Yet a security recording from half an hour earlier showed a man who moved exactly like Frank walking beside a supposedly dead Margaret Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Reed asked the funeral director to prepare records concerning transfer, embalming, identification, and chain of custody.<\/p>\n<p>Then he ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Ross immediately said, \u201cIt has to be old footage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joanna Pierce shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe camera system timestamps from the facility server, not from the individual cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could still be wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entry gate logged Margaret\u2019s vehicle three minutes earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane lifted her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat vehicle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joanna turned the laptop toward us.<\/p>\n<p>A dark blue sedan had entered using a temporary access code.<\/p>\n<p>The code belonged to Frank.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat code was canceled after he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Joanna said. \u201cAccording to the facility, it was renewed online yesterday afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>While Frank\u2019s body had been lying in the funeral home.<\/p>\n<p>My sister, Evelyn, sank into a plastic chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wished it were.<\/p>\n<p>Insanity would at least explain the shape of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Reed crouched beside the overturned filing cabinet and inspected the drawers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knew about this unit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Bell answered first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank\u2019s accountant, probably his private investigator, and perhaps the attorney who helped prepare certain trust documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEileen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane whispered, \u201cMom knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross swore.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at the concrete floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe kept asking whether Dad had found anything. I didn\u2019t know what she meant at first. Then one night she mentioned a storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout two months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell Frank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she said she would disappear again if I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice broke on the last word.<\/p>\n<p>For all the terrible things she had done, I could see the frightened daughter beneath them.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had abandoned her once.<\/p>\n<p>Then returned and learned exactly how to exploit the wound.<\/p>\n<p>Reed stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to the funeral home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron touched my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not have to be present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If I had buried a stranger, I needed to know.<\/p>\n<p>If I had not, then I needed to understand why Frank\u2019s ghost had walked out of a storage unit carrying secrets with a woman who had supposedly died decades earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The drive back across town took nineteen minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the passenger window, ordinary life continued with insulting calm. A man watered a lawn. Two teenagers shared french fries outside a fast-food restaurant. A woman pushed a stroller while talking on her phone.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, I had believed the worst thing that could happen to me had already happened.<\/p>\n<p>By evening, death itself had become uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>The funeral director, Mr. Calvin Reed\u2014not related to Malcolm\u2014met us behind the building.<\/p>\n<p>His hands trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called the cemetery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve agreed to an emergency disinterment order pending authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm Reed showed him paperwork already transmitted by the district attorney\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never had anything like this happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither have I,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The casket returned after dark.<\/p>\n<p>Mud covered its lower edges.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing it again nearly brought me to my knees.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, I had placed my palm on that polished wood and whispered goodbye.<\/p>\n<p>Now three workers rolled it into the preparation room beneath fluorescent lights.<\/p>\n<p>Reed asked whether I wanted to wait outside.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin removed the locking hardware.<\/p>\n<p>The lid lifted.<\/p>\n<p>The man inside wore Frank\u2019s navy suit.<\/p>\n<p>My hand flew to my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>At first nothing looked different.<\/p>\n<p>Same white hair.<\/p>\n<p>Same narrow chin.<\/p>\n<p>Same folded hands.<\/p>\n<p>Then Reed asked Calvin to remove the cosmetic covering near the left temple.<\/p>\n<p>The funeral director hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A damp cloth passed across the skin.<\/p>\n<p>Color came away.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath was a scar.<\/p>\n<p>Frank had no scar there.<\/p>\n<p>Diane gasped.<\/p>\n<p>Ross backed into the wall.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>The face was similar.<\/p>\n<p>Extremely similar.<\/p>\n<p>But now that I knew to look, the differences became obvious.<\/p>\n<p>The nose was slightly wider.<\/p>\n<p>The earlobes were attached.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s were not.<\/p>\n<p>And on the right hand, beneath the folded fingers, this man wore a gold wedding band engraved with letters I had never seen.<\/p>\n<p>J.H.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t Frank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice barely existed.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin stared at the body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I received Mr. Mercer from the hospice transport team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalk us through everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank had died at 2:17 a.m. two days earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The hospice nurse completed her paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>At 4:03 a.m., a transport company contracted by the funeral home arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Two workers collected the body.<\/p>\n<p>At 4:51, the funeral home logged receipt.<\/p>\n<p>But the electronic record showed something unusual.<\/p>\n<p>The employee who signed the body into refrigeration had used another worker\u2019s credentials.<\/p>\n<p>That employee had not actually been on duty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calvin pulled a schedule.<\/p>\n<p>A temporary night assistant named Leonard Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna looked at Reed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She searched the files on her tablet.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard Pike appeared in records connected to one of Margaret\u2019s shell companies.<\/p>\n<p>Not as an executive.<\/p>\n<p>As a paid consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Ross whispered, \u201cShe switched the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the dead stranger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A fingerprint scanner answered within an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-one.<\/p>\n<p>Former accountant.<\/p>\n<p>Reported missing eleven days earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna\u2019s expression tightened when she heard the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale worked on one of Margaret\u2019s businesses in the nineties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegitimate work?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot according to the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hale had helped hide assets.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, he cooperated with federal investigators.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret disappeared before charges could fully develop.<\/p>\n<p>Frank had contacted Hale four months ago.<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timeline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale may have been helping Frank investigate Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We were not looking at a random corpse.<\/p>\n<p>We were looking at someone connected to the secrets in the stolen red folder.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin removed Frank\u2019s suit jacket from Hale\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the inner pocket was a folded funeral card.<\/p>\n<p>My name had been written on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Eileen\u2014<\/p>\n<p>If you are reading this, then the switch worked.<\/p>\n<p>The room disappeared around me.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>No doubt.<\/p>\n<p>I read the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Do not trust the death certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Do not trust anyone who insists I died exactly as expected.<\/p>\n<p>The red folder matters, but not for the reason Margaret believes.<\/p>\n<p>Find what Helen left at Crescent Lake.<\/p>\n<p>And Red\u2014whatever you learn about me, remember that loving you was the one thing in my life that required no deception.<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook so badly the card rattled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew,\u201d Diane said.<\/p>\n<p>She was staring at Aaron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Dad planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron\u2019s face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew he had contingency instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I did not know he intended to fake his death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross laughed once, without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently everyone in this family is insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed took the funeral card carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Frank arranged a body substitution, he committed several crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless someone else arranged it,\u201d Aaron said.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Hale.<\/p>\n<p>At Frank\u2019s suit.<\/p>\n<p>At a dead man hidden behind my husband\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank wrote, \u2018If the switch worked.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe expected a switch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not necessarily this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<p>The note did not say Frank had placed Hale in the casket.<\/p>\n<p>It said he expected something to be substituted.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Frank knew Margaret would try to steal his body.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he had planned to let her.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps we still understood nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Diane took out her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed stopped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows where Dad is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalling her warns her we know the body was switched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe already knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe. But we do not know what she thinks you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at him, breathing hard.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s voice said, \u201cRed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees nearly gave way.<\/p>\n<p>Not a recording.<\/p>\n<p>Not distorted.<\/p>\n<p>Frank.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the edge of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have any idea what you\u2019ve done?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI buried someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me bury someone!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His silence hurt more than an excuse.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not get to apologize in two words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Reed gestured for Joanna to trace the call.<\/p>\n<p>Frank continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret has the red folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted her to steal it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it contains the only lie she still believes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line crackled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat lie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat your mother betrayed her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she didn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what happened at Lake Crescent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen saved two children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane and me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cold traveled along my spine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was the other child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank answered softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve met her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then the call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna slammed her hand against the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrace failed.
