Not the drug.”

Aaron opened the door.

Investigator Malcolm Reed entered first. Joanna Pierce, the forensic accountant, followed with a portfolio packed with records Frank had gathered.

Joanna placed a document before me.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

Except it wasn’t mine.

The shape was close.

Too close.

She explained that someone had copied it from legitimate refinancing papers.

The forged document would have transferred property rights into a holding company associated with Frank’s children.

Eventually, Joanna said, they could have gained enough control to force a sale.

Perhaps even force me out.

I stared at Diane.

“You drugged me because you wanted my house?”

Her crying intensified.

She said I had changed Frank.

That he stopped putting his children first after marrying me.

That everything became “ours” instead of “his.”

For nineteen years I had swallowed variations of the same accusation.

Not that I had mistreated Frank.

That I had loved him and he had loved me back.

“I cleaned him when he was too weak to reach the bathroom,” I said. “I held bowls while he vomited. from you.”

She said nothing.

Reed did.

“There’s more.”

Joanna spread bank records across the dining table.

Nearly half a million dollars had moved from one of Frank’s investment accounts over several years.

The receiving company was linked to Ross.

He immediately claimed the transfers were legitimate payments.

Joanna calmly pointed out that the company had ceased operating before most of them occurred.

Then she showed us checks.

I knew Frank’s signature.

Those were wrong.

Ross blamed Diane.

Diane blamed Ross.

Watching them, I finally understood why Frank had trusted outsiders with his investigation.

He had wanted desperately to believe his children.

My fall had ended that hope.

After I was hospitalized, Frank found one of Diane’s scarves in our kitchen.

She had told him she had not visited that day.

He began investigating.

First came the property documents.

Then the missing money.

Then something none of us expected.

Joanna removed photographs from her portfolio.

I recognized myself.

Leaving the supermarket.

Watering flowers.

Sitting outside a café.

Walking to my car.

Someone had followed me for years.

Payments to the surveillance investigator came through Hawthorne Residential Holdings, the same network connected to the attempted property transfer.

Joanna had eventually traced the company’s original registration.

She slid a page toward me.

Margaret Mercer.

I read it twice.

Frank’s first wife.

The woman whose grave I had visited with him.

The woman Frank said had died years before we met.

Ross stared at Diane.

“You told me she was dead.”

Diane whispered, “The woman in that grave is dead.”

Silence.

“But not Margaret,” I said.

Diane closed her eyes.

Years earlier, Margaret had contacted her.

Alive.

Hidden.

Wanting money.

At first Diane believed the call was fraudulent.

Then Margaret supplied childhood details nobody else should have known.

Diane began paying her.

Thousands became tens of thousands.

Eventually hundreds of thousands.

“Why?”

Diane looked at me.

“Because she knew something.”

“About what?”

“You.”

My hands went cold.

Margaret had known me before Frank did.

More precisely, she had known my mother.

I looked instinctively toward the mantel clock.

Diane noticed.

“That’s why I marked it.”

Understanding hit me.

“You weren’t claiming it as Dad’s property.”

“No.”

“Margaret told you to take it.”

Diane nodded.

According to Margaret, my mother had hidden something inside.

I removed the clock from the mantel.

The walnut case was heavier than I remembered.

Four small screws secured the back.

Ross found a screwdriver.

I almost refused to let him touch it.

Then I held the clock while he removed the screws.

Behind the mechanism lay a yellowed envelope.

My maiden name appeared across the front.

Eileen Harper.

My mother’s handwriting.

My fingers trembled.

Inside was an old photograph.

Two young women stood near a lake.

One was my mother.

The other was unmistakably Margaret.

1978 was written on the back.

Beneath the date, my mother had added a short note implying that she and Margaret had done something Frank could never be allowed to discover.

I read it again.

“What happened in 1978?”

Before anyone answered, the telephone rang.

Reed told me to leave it.

Joanna checked the number.

It was associated with the same prepaid network Margaret had used to contact Diane.

The ringing continued.

I picked up.

“Hello?”

An elderly woman spoke.

“You finally opened the clock.”

Every hair on my arms lifted.

“Margaret?”

She ignored the question.

“Frank should have stopped digging.”

“What did you do?”

“Ask what happened at Lake Crescent.”

My mind went blank.

“When?”

“1978.”

“I was six.”

“I know.”

“I don’t remember being there.”

A pause.

“You weren’t supposed to.”

The line went dead.

Reed opened his portfolio again.

He had anticipated this connection.

An old newspaper clipping described a cabin fire near Lake Crescent.

My parents had been there.

So had I.

The photograph accompanying the article showed six-year-old me wrapped in a blanket.

Another child had vanished during the confusion.

A four-year-old girl.

Her name was Diane.

I looked across the room.

The Diane I knew was older than that missing child should have been.

The dates contradicted the life story Frank’s family had always told.

Diane looked equally shaken.

“What is this?”

Reed said they had discovered inconsistencies in her early records.

Diane shook her head.

“No.”

Ross picked up the newspaper clipping.

“This isn’t possible.”

But Diane was staring at the photograph.

At the little girl.

At herself.

And for the first time, the woman who had spent nineteen years telling me that blood determined who belonged in Frank’s family appeared uncertain whether she knew whose blood ran through her own veins.

<a
