In none of them had she looked nervous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t come because I want Marcus,\u201d she repeated.<\/p>\n<p>I set my purse on a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I should have contacted you sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The photographer, Nina, glanced between us and immediately developed an intense professional interest in rearranging equipment on the opposite side of the studio.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah remained near the door.<\/p>\n<p>She had insisted on coming.<\/p>\n<p>For once, I was grateful she ignored my argument that I could handle things alone.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel folded her sunglasses and held them in both hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we talk before you start?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>We sat near the windows.<\/p>\n<p>For a few seconds, all I could hear was traffic below and the soft metallic click of Nina adjusting a light stand.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at my dress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The compliment surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I almost laughed at the absurdity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is strange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday I thought I hated you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have blamed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer removed some of the fight I had brought with me.<\/p>\n<p>I crossed one leg over the other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus contacted me several months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know some of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The distinction made my stomach tighten.<\/p>\n<p>She unlocked her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe reached out when my father was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Marcus mentioning Rachel\u2019s father once, years earlier. They had dated before Marcus and I met. Their relationship, according to him, had ended because Rachel was demanding and unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p>I suddenly wondered which parts of that story had belonged to Marcus rather than reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew Dad had been hospitalized,\u201d Rachel continued. \u201cHe sent a message asking how I was. At first, it was normal. Marcus had been building his career in Austin and begged me not to make us choose between cities.<\/p>\n<p>We agreed together that I would stay.<\/p>\n<p>Now, somewhere inside the story he told Rachel, my compromise had become lack of ambition.<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me break quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah must have seen it.<\/p>\n<p>She moved closer but didn\u2019t interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel spoke carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t write these.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. But I answered him longer than I should have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I handed back the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you send him pictures?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Pain, clean and immediate.<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t look away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing explicit. But yes. I sent pictures when he asked. I flirted back for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to be gracious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not being gracious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice remained level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to know what\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s shoulders dropped slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She scrolled farther.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt some point, I started feeling uncomfortable. He was talking about you too much. Not like a man leaving a marriage. Like a man using his wife as an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you stopped?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She showed me.<\/p>\n<p>The change was obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s answers shortened.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s did not.<\/p>\n<p>He sent late-night messages.<\/p>\n<p>Compliments.<\/p>\n<p>Questions.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs of himself.<\/p>\n<p>Once, after Rachel failed to respond for nearly a day, he sent three messages in succession asking whether she was angry.<\/p>\n<p>Another read: Don\u2019t disappear on me again.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>That possessiveness sounded familiar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we broke up,\u201d Rachel said, \u201che did something similar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made me believe everything wrong between us was my fault. If I wanted space, I was cold. If I asked where he\u2019d been, I was controlling. If I got angry, my anger became the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah shifted behind me.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel gave a small, embarrassed shrug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent years thinking maybe he had grown up with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words hurt in an unexpected way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent years thinking he had become this way because something was wrong with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe neither of us was the cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence filled the studio.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since seeing Marcus\u2019s comment beneath Rachel\u2019s photograph, I looked at her without comparison.<\/p>\n<p>She was beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>That remained true.<\/p>\n<p>But her beauty no longer felt like evidence against mine.<\/p>\n<p>She was simply another woman sitting in a studio with a phone full of Marcus\u2019s contradictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat made you message me last night?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy photograph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one you posted before the argument.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered it. A casual picture Sarah had taken at lunch a week earlier. Marcus had criticized it afterward, saying the angle was unflattering.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus sent me a message about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you were trying too hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen later he told me he\u2019d asked you to delete it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was true.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had.<\/p>\n<p>He said strangers online didn\u2019t need access to everything.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I had interpreted the remark as jealousy.<\/p>\n<p>Now I saw it differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted me smaller,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s voice was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did that to me too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nina approached cautiously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can delay if you need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around the studio.<\/p>\n<p>The black dress.<\/p>\n<p>The makeup.<\/p>\n<p>The lights.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, all of it had been conceived as an answer to Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly that felt insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cWe\u2019re shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should probably leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her confusion was genuine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou invited me to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invited you to a photoshoot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want me in the pictures?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Nina, who had admirably pretended not to hear half our conversation, cleared her throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can work with uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled despite myself.<\/p>\n<p>We began with individual portraits.<\/p>\n<p>At first, my body felt rigid. Every pose seemed like performance. Chin here. Shoulder there. Hand at the waist.<\/p>\n<p>Then Nina lowered the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop posing for whoever you\u2019re angry at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence hit me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re looking at the lens like you\u2019re trying to defeat someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForget him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>Then back toward the enormous window where late Texas sunlight had begun turning amber.<\/p>\n<p>Forget him.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgive.<\/p>\n<p>Not excuse.<\/p>\n<p>Simply remove him from the frame.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>Nina began shooting again.<\/p>\n<p>Something changed.<\/p>\n<p>My shoulders loosened.<\/p>\n<p>My hands stopped trying to look elegant.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped imagining Marcus seeing the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>For ten minutes, maybe fifteen, there was only the click of the shutter.<\/p>\n<p>When Nina showed me the previews, I barely recognized myself.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I looked younger.<\/p>\n<p>Not because makeup had erased anything.<\/p>\n<p>I looked present.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel came to stand beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to a photograph where I wasn\u2019t smiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUse that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you look like you know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied it.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I did.<\/p>\n<p>Nina looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have an idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel immediately shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah grinned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five minutes later, Rachel and I stood beside each other in front of the industrial window.<\/p>\n<p>It should have felt ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>Instead it felt strangely honest.<\/p>\n<p>We weren\u2019t friends.<\/p>\n<p>We weren\u2019t allies in some polished, inspirational sense.<\/p>\n<p>We were two people comparing evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Nina took the first frame.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>For reasons neither of us could explain, we both started laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Not because anything was funny.<\/p>\n<p>Because the situation was so absurd that laughter became the only emotion large enough to contain it.<\/p>\n<p>Nina kept shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually the laughter faded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow look at the camera,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>We did.<\/p>\n<p>Click.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting image silenced the room.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel and I stood shoulder to shoulder, neither smiling, neither competing.<\/p>\n<p>Two women Marcus had tried to place inside separate versions of reality.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah whispered, \u201cThat\u2019s the one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew immediately what she meant.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had sent eleven messages.<\/p>\n<p>Where are you?<\/p>\n<p>We need to talk.<\/p>\n<p>Please don\u2019t post anything.<\/p>\n<p>Elena, answer me.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored all of them.<\/p>\n<p>I uploaded the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>For the caption, I wrote one sentence about discovering that sometimes two women believed to be rivals were simply being told different stories by the same man.<\/p>\n<p>Then I posted it.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel watched the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For approximately thirty seconds, nothing happened.<\/p>\n<p>Then notifications began arriving.<\/p>\n<p>Comments.<\/p>\n<p>Messages.<\/p>\n<p>Calls.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s phone started vibrating too.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel laughed nervously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister just saw it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another notification appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>And another.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus called.<\/p>\n<p>I declined it.<\/p>\n<p>He called again.<\/p>\n<p>Declined.<\/p>\n<p>A third time.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s panicking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed my phone facedown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s losing control of the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later, the studio door opened so hard it struck the stopper behind it.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stood in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>His chest rose and fell as though he had run upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>His gaze found me first.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Then the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the hell is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=24755\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Marcus Came to Stop the Photoshoot, but Rachel\u2019s Answer Forced Him to Reveal Exactly What He Still Believed<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel removed her sunglasses slowly.
