IMPORTANT.<\/p>\n<p>I typed:<\/p>\n<p>I AM NOT JOINING THE PANEL.<\/p>\n<p>Her response came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>NOT THE PANEL.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>IT\u2019S ABOUT THE ORIGINAL STORM REPORT.<\/p>\n<p>My smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d Sarah asked.<\/p>\n<p>I showed her.<\/p>\n<p>She frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could still be left?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not know.<\/p>\n<p>We had the warning.<\/p>\n<p>The tow.<\/p>\n<p>The texts.<\/p>\n<p>The trooper.<\/p>\n<p>The delivery record.<\/p>\n<p>The customer.<\/p>\n<p>What could still be unresolved about that night?<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Rachel answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe call recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat call recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour conversation with Victor during the storm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou recorded it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel turned her laptop toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDispatch lines were automatically archived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the audio file on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly every piece of the investigation had depended on something someone intentionally saved.<\/p>\n<p>This had survived by accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t anyone find it earlier?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRetention system indexed it under the route number, not your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She clicked play.<\/p>\n<p>Rain roared faintly in the background.<\/p>\n<p>Then Victor\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>And mine.<\/p>\n<p>Clearer than memory.<\/p>\n<p>When the recording reached the moment I told him there was a child in the vehicle, Rachel paused it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something after the part you remembered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She resumed.<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s voice came through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you stop every time someone waves at you from the shoulder, you don\u2019t belong on priority freight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not stopping for everyone.
