He placed each one into a banker\u2019s box and wrote the employee name on a log sheet before sealing the lid with tamper-evident tape.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent years hauling freight that required fewer precautions than my own personnel record suddenly did.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood near the filing cabinet speaking into her phone in a low voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. happened next, you remember the actual sequence.<\/p>\n<p>Julian remained in the room for only the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>After twenty minutes, he stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should give you privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re leaving?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached into his jacket and handed me an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe towing money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to come here for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already did enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stopped before you knew my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not a question?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of company punishes the person who stops?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced toward Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat question matters to me for reasons larger than one freight invoice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood then that whatever discussions Hayes Tech had with Apex, the storm had collided with them at exactly the wrong\u2014or right\u2014moment.<\/p>\n<p>Julian held out his hand.<\/p>\n<p>I shook it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Lily the flashlight did its job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After he left, Rebecca continued the smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither did you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise called my name and handed me a route packet.<\/p>\n<p>Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>Normal pay.<\/p>\n<p>Normal left, Elliot stopped me again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something I didn\u2019t tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the dispatch counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor kept a second notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of notebook?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack cover. Small enough to fit in his jacket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.
