At first I thought somebody was signaling traffic away from debris. Then my headlights caught the shape of a dark SUV tilted close to the right lane, its hazard lamps blinking red against the wet pavement.

I eased off the accelerator.

The trailer behind me was loaded with electronics bound for a Detroit warehouse, and the appointment window printed on my paperwork had already become a problem. The storm had slowed traffic for nearly an hour. My dispatcher, Victor Vance, had sent three messages reminding me that the customer expected the shipment on time.

A fourth message had been less polite.

DO NOT GIVE THEM AN EXCUSE TO REJECT THE LOAD.

I had been driving for Apex Freight long enough to understand what Victor meant. Weather happened. Construction happened. Accidents happened. According to Victor, none of those things mattered once a driver had accepted a route. If the wheels stopped turning, he wanted a name to blame.

The SUV came closer.

A man stood behind it in a rain-soaked jacket, waving both arms. Another tractor-trailer rushed past in the left lane and threw a wall of dirty water across him. He staggered toward the guardrail.

Then that flashlight appeared again from inside the vehicle.

A child's face showed briefly behind the rear side window.

I checked my mirrors, turned on my four-way flashers, and guided the rig onto the shoulder roughly fifty yards ahead of them.

My phone rang before I had even set the brake.

Victor.

I stared at his name for two rings, already knowing the conversation I was about to have.

“What happened?” he said when I answered.

“There’s a disabled SUV on the interstate. Family inside. They’re sitting too close to traffic.”

A pause.

Then, flatly, “Are you involved in the accident?”

“No accident. Looks like a breakdown.”

“Then why are you stopped?”

I looked through the windshield. The man was hurrying toward my truck, one hand shielding his eyes from the rain.

“Because they’re stranded.”

Victor exhaled hard enough for me to hear it over the engine. “Marcus, you are already running behind.”

“I know what time it is.”

“Apparently you don’t. That receiving dock closes the appointment window at seven.”

“They’ve got a kid in the car.”

“And there are roadside services for that.”

The man reached my passenger door. I motioned for him to wait while I spoke.

“Victor, they’re half in the breakdown lane. Visibility is awful.”

“State patrol can handle it.”

“If somebody hits that SUV before patrol gets here, that won't help much.”

His voice sharpened. “Keep moving.”

I looked at the man outside. Water ran from his hair down his face. His lips were pale from the cold.

“I’ll leave when I know help is coming.”

“Marcus.”

“I heard you.”

“No, I don’t think you did. You are hauling a high-value shipment. Your responsibility is to the load.”

I stared through the windshield at the tiny flashlight glowing inside the SUV.

“My responsibility also includes not driving past a family that might get killed.”

Victor went silent for a second.

When he spoke again, every word sounded measured.

“Miss the delivery window, and you may have just cost yourself your job.”

The call ended.

The cab suddenly felt too quiet.

I took a screenshot of the call log without knowing exactly why, slipped the phone into my coat, and climbed down into the rain.

The man met me beside the cab.

“Thank you,” he said immediately. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know what else to do.”

“Everybody okay?”

“My wife and daughter are in the car. Nobody’s hurt. The engine died, then everything electrical started going. I managed to coast over, but it wouldn’t restart.”

“Anybody call a tow?”

“I’ve been trying. The signal keeps dropping.”

He held up his phone. Rain had collected along the cracked edge of the case.

“What’s your name?”

“Julian.”

“Marcus.”

He reached out automatically, then looked at his wet hand and almost laughed. “Probably not the moment for introductions.”

I shook it anyway.

“Let’s get your family farther from traffic first.”

We approached the SUV from the passenger side. The shoulder was narrow, and every passing vehicle pushed cold wind against our backs. I could feel the pavement tremble whenever a tractor-trailer passed.

A woman sat in the front passenger seat. She lowered the window an inch.

“I’m Claire,” she said. “Our daughter’s in back.”

The girl leaned forward between the seats. She could not have been more than seven or eight. She wore a purple sweatshirt and held the little flashlight that had caught my attention.

“What’s her name?” I asked.

“Lily,” Julian said.

Lily studied my reflective jacket.

“Are you a truck driver?”

“That’s what they keep telling me.”

She smiled despite the situation.

I crouched enough to see her through the window.

“You keep that flashlight working, okay? It helped me see you.”

Her fingers tightened around it.

“I was making the cars notice us.”

“You did a good job.”

The nearest guardrail left almost nowhere safe for the family to stand, and the ground beyond it dropped into a muddy drainage ditch. Keeping them inside the SUV was uncomfortable, but moving them outside in heavy traffic seemed worse.

I called state patrol first. The dispatcher took our location and said a trooper had already been sent toward several storm-related incidents along that stretch.

Then I started calling towing companies.

The first said forty minutes.

The second said they had no available truck.

The third quoted a price that made Julian stare at me in disbelief, then said they would need payment authorization before dispatch.

“I’ll handle it,” I said.

Julian turned toward me. “No. Absolutely not.”

“You can reimburse me later.”

“I can pay.”

“Your phone keeps losing service and mine isn’t. We can argue after they send the truck.”

I gave the towing company my card information.

Julian watched me finish the call.

“You don’t know us.”

“I know you’re standing on an interstate in a storm.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“I know.”

For the first time since I had stopped, he seemed unsure what to say.

A horn blared from the highway.

The sound was followed by a violent splash as a speeding pickup drifted partly onto the shoulder before jerking back into its lane. Water slammed into the SUV and sprayed across Julian and me.

Lily screamed inside.

That ended any remaining question about whether I should stay.

I repositioned my truck farther back and slightly toward the lane, enough to make approaching drivers see my flashing lights earlier without creating another hazard. Then I placed emergency triangles behind the rig.

When I returned to the SUV, Claire had climbed into the back beside Lily.

Julian stood with his hands in his pockets, staring at the traffic.

“What do you haul?” he asked.

“Tonight? Electronics.”

“Anything exciting?”

“Boxes I’m not allowed to open.”

That got a tired laugh.

“Where are they going?”

“Detroit warehouse.”

“Long night.”

“Getting longer.”

His expression changed.

“Because of us?”

“Because of the storm.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

I glanced toward my truck.

Victor’s warning still sat in my head.

You may have just cost yourself your job.

“I have a dispatcher who thinks schedules are a branch of religion.”

Julian gave me a careful look.

“Are you going to get in trouble for this?”

“I’ve been in trouble for less.”

“That’s not funny.”

“It wasn’t meant to be.”

His face tightened.

“We can wait for the tow ourselves.”

“No.”

“Marcus—”

“You’ve got a child in there and cars coming past at seventy miles an hour in rain. I’m staying until somebody else is here.”

He lowered his eyes for a moment.

Then he said, “Thank you.”

The state trooper arrived thirty minutes later.

He parked behind the SUV, added another wall of flashing lights, checked on Claire and Lily, and took our names. Once he understood what had happened, he gave me a short nod.

“Good thing you stopped. We’ve had two cars slide off the road within ten miles of here.”

Julian looked at me when the trooper said it.

Neither of us commented.

The tow truck arrived nearly an hour after I had pulled over.

By then, the storm had eased from a downpour to a steady, cold rain. Lily was tired. Claire looked exhausted. Julian had stopped pretending he wasn't worried about how much trouble I might be in.

The tow driver loaded the SUV while I stood beside Julian beneath the brim of my soaked cap.

“You gave them your card,” he said.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“I’m not telling you while we’re standing here.”

He shook his head.

“At least give me your number.”

I reached into the cab and found the carbon receipt the tow driver had handed me. My name, Marcus Thorne, was printed on the billing section because I had paid.

I passed it to Julian.

“My name’s there. You can mail me a check if it keeps you from losing sleep.”

He studied the receipt.

“Marcus Thorne.”

“That’s me.”

He folded it carefully and slipped it into the inside pocket of his jacket.

Then he held out his hand.

This time neither of us cared that it was cold and wet.

“My family won’t forget this.”

“Get them somewhere warm. That’ll be enough.”

Julian looked toward the tow truck where Lily was climbing into the cab beside her mother.

“No,” he said quietly. “I don’t think it will be.”

I assumed he meant he would repay me.

I climbed back into my rig and never imagined that folded receipt would return to me in a room full of people whose names I did not yet know.

For the moment, I had a delivery to finish.

The clock on my dashboard told me exactly how bad the situation was.

I was going to miss the appointment.

Victor sent one final message before I pulled away.

DON’T EXPECT ME TO FIX THIS FOR YOU TOMORROW.

I read it twice.

Then I started the engine, checked my mirrors, and headed toward Detroit.

By sunrise, I would discover that stopping for Julian’s family had cost me more than a late arrival.

Victor had already decided to make an example out of me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: By Morning the Family Was Safe, but the Paper Waiting on Victor’s Desk Put My Own Future in Danger

The first thing I noticed was the flashlight.
