hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to see where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Not competition.<\/p>\n<p>Introduction.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning we drove to the lakeside cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Maya led us between maple trees.<\/p>\n<p>Two stones stood together.<\/p>\n<p>SARAH BENNETT.<\/p>\n<p>THOMAS BENNETT.<\/p>\n<p>Beloved parents.<\/p>\n<p>Maya stopped.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes no one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then she placed the stuffed rabbit between the stones.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo were they.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Maya crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom. Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carl flinched slightly at the second word.<\/p>\n<p>Then steadied himself.<\/p>\n<p>Maya continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked back at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Maya laughed through her own tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s crowded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer to the graves.<\/p>\n<p>There were a thousand things I could have said to Sarah Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Why didn\u2019t you call?<\/p>\n<p>Why did you wait?<\/p>\n<p>Thank you.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m angry.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sorry.<\/p>\n<p>You loved her.<\/p>\n<p>You kept her.<\/p>\n<p>You tried.<\/p>\n<p>You failed.<\/p>\n<p>All true.<\/p>\n<p>None enough.<\/p>\n<p>So I said only:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the stone.<\/p>\n<p>Carl placed one hand on Thomas Bennett\u2019s marker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For what exactly, I did not know.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe for searching in ways that frightened them.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe for not finding Maya sooner.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe because another man had raised his daughter while he lived in shadows.<\/p>\n<p>Maya let him have the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>As we walked back toward the car, Harris called again.<\/p>\n<p>This time his voice was different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found Michael Horne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe turned himself in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe heard Arthur was arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he\u2019ll testify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the Bennett crash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho ordered it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael says Jonathan Reed did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carl swore quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJonathan did not order Sarah and Thomas killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he order?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntimidation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>A threat intended to stop them.<\/p>\n<p>Then someone escalated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho cut the brake line?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Peter changed the instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Jonathan know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot until afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he cover it up?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Jonathan was not innocent.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered terror.<\/p>\n<p>Peter converted terror into murder.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan concealed it.<\/p>\n<p>Different guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Same dead couple.<\/p>\n<p>Maya watched my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I speak to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can give a victim-impact statement when appropriate. You can speak through investigators.
