Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked toward Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter intercepted one of Helen\u2019s messages years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he knew she had hidden evidence with family materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to suspect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why wait until now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he didn&#39;t know which family member.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until the break-in at Rachel\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Until the note.<\/p>\n<p>Until the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had followed the chain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter figured it out this week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That meant the lake archive was now compromised.<\/p>\n<p>Harris ordered immediate transport.<\/p>\n<p>We would not leave the albums there.<\/p>\n<p>Everything was photographed, sealed, cataloged.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stayed with us.<\/p>\n<p>No more being the unwitting custodian.<\/p>\n<p>As officers carried boxes outside, I looked at the family photograph that had started this part of the trail.<\/p>\n<p>Me at ten.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel at four.<\/p>\n<p>Mom behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Dad holding the older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another parental failure through silence.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really are consistent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we sisters?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question broke something in me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did he ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBox 315.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The box next to Caroline\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>No one had opened it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns 315?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked at Caroline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read the registered name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>And unlike Caroline\u2019s box, this one had been accessed recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The authorization log showed one name.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve never been there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen someone used your identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A false emergency access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave the bank a code phrase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat phrase?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe twins are together again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s tape had used the same idea.<\/p>\n<p>If the twins are together again.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had heard the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Or Mom had given the phrase to someone else.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Caroline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knew that phrase?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly three people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline\u2019s answer came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret Hartwell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s biological mother.<\/p>\n<p>Dead twenty-six years.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps, in this family, that word required evidence every single time.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline looked at Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally.<\/p>\n<p>A real death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen someone else knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer made Harris go silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He listened again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend the footage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five minutes later we watched surveillance from the previous afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>A woman entered First National.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball cap.<\/p>\n<p>Glasses.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s identification.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s signature copied well enough to pass.<\/p>\n<p>She opened Box 315.<\/p>\n<p>Removed one envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Left everything else.<\/p>\n<p>The camera caught her face when she looked up.<\/p>\n<p>I knew her.<\/p>\n<p>Not Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Not Laura.<\/p>\n<p>Not Diane.<\/p>\n<p>The woman from thirteen years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Gray coat.<\/p>\n<p>Younger then.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who approached me outside the pediatric wing.<\/p>\n<p>The woman I had believed was Evelyn Hart.<\/p>\n<p>I turned slowly toward Evelyn, who had just arrived at the cabin under police escort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren&#39;t the woman at the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirteen years ago.
