Stay in position.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle engine roared from the upper ramp.<\/p>\n<p>Clara turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A black sedan descended toward us.<\/p>\n<p>Too fast.<\/p>\n<p>Claire froze.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed her arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind the pillar!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We ran.<\/p>\n<p>The sedan accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>Gunfire erupted from the far side of the garage.<\/p>\n<p>State officers returned fire.<\/p>\n<p>Glass shattered.<\/p>\n<p>The sedan swerved.<\/p>\n<p>It struck a concrete barrier and stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Officers surrounded it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHands!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow your hands!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept Claire behind the pillar.<\/p>\n<p>Clara crouched beside us.<\/p>\n<p>The driver&#39;s door opened.<\/p>\n<p>A man emerged.<\/p>\n<p>Not Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>He dropped a weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Police took him down.<\/p>\n<p>Passenger seat empty.<\/p>\n<p>Harris reached us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot in the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His radio crackled.<\/p>\n<p>Then an officer shouted from another level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLieutenant, we have a second vehicle exiting west ramp!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris ran.<\/p>\n<p>Sirens erupted below.<\/p>\n<p>Claire leaned against the pillar.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Clara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Samuel arrange all of this just to get the key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the safe-deposit box matters more than Claire herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s comforting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t mean\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the paper in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBox 314.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Caroline.<\/p>\n<p>My supposedly dead aunt.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Grace.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>The first generation of the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice secure the bank first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you decide whether you want to open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really mean that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause too many people in this story confused protecting someone with owning their decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Claire folded the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I want to open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We went downstairs under police escort.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel&#39;s second vehicle had escaped.<\/p>\n<p>But officers had obtained the plate.<\/p>\n<p>Harris issued a statewide alert.<\/p>\n<p>Anna reached us.<\/p>\n<p>She walked directly toward Clara.<\/p>\n<p>Mother and daughter stopped three feet apart.<\/p>\n<p>Clara whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna&#39;s face broke.<\/p>\n<p>Then she slapped her mother.<\/p>\n<p>Hard.<\/p>\n<p>Clara staggered.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody intervened.<\/p>\n<p>Anna began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m done attending your funerals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara nodded through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna hugged her.<\/p>\n<p>It was not forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>But it was contact.<\/p>\n<p>I turned away.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Carl.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was stronger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGirls?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood why he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarl, we&#39;re going to a bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing. It&#39;s just every time you call, the story gets stranger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped make it strange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told him about Claire and the key.<\/p>\n<p>He went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaroline Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou remember her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother mentioned her once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe night Emily was born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carl hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Caroline saved your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she meant when you were a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaved me from what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wouldn&#39;t explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old story opened another door.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Clara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Caroline ever protect me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara heard.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were a baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara glanced at Claire.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Anna.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca, your family became involved with Samuel Voss long before you were born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother discovered his first illegal placement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe year before your birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was the child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara looked at me with unmistakable dread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything inside me went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen Mercer gave birth to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe raised me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what placement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you say me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Samuel tried to take you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRetaliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Helen exposing him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Caroline stopped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned against the car.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern was older than my daughters.<\/p>\n<p>Older than Carl.<\/p>\n<p>Older than Reed&#39;s ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had once threatened to take me because my mother challenged him.<\/p>\n<p>Decades later, his daughter helped take Emily after another scheme began to collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Different acts.<\/p>\n<p>Same culture of treating children as leverage.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated again.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Harris&#39;s forensic team.<\/p>\n<p>They had identified the woman who had impersonated Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Name:<\/p>\n<p>Diane Keller.<\/p>\n<p>Former private nurse.<\/p>\n<p>Employment history included one name that made Clara swear aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Voss.<\/p>\n<p>His personal nurse for twenty-two years.<\/p>\n<p>Another message followed.<\/p>\n<p>Diane&#39;s vehicle had been found outside First National Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows about the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo does Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris was already moving toward his car.<\/p>\n<p>Claire closed her fist around the brass key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#39;d better get there first.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=24535\">Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Diane Keller Reached the Bank Before Us, but Caroline\u2019s Safe-Deposit Box Contained Something Samuel Voss Never Expected to Survive<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nobody believed I should go alone.
