Whatever happened as babies didn&#39;t change who grew up in our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<p>I knew my daughters.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever bracelet errors existed in the nursery, Emily and Lily had come home with me and lived with me for five years.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#39;t another identity twist.<\/p>\n<p>It was an earlier clue.<\/p>\n<p>A connection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrace&#39;s disappearance may have been the beginning,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Caroline may have discovered it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna looked at Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen storage unit 114 matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll secure it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Anna said. \u201cI&#39;m going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Maya spoke behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>She raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you say no: the archive might contain information about what happened to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was right.<\/p>\n<p>Lily stepped beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Maya goes, I go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost objected.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe go with police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Dad remained with Carl.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn stayed under questioning.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret agreed to accompany us.<\/p>\n<p>The drive to Wilmington took nearly two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Night had fallen.<\/p>\n<p>Storage unit 114 stood inside a gated facility near an industrial park.<\/p>\n<p>State police cleared the building first.<\/p>\n<p>The key opened the lock.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were dozens of boxes.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Medical files.<\/p>\n<p>Cassette tapes.<\/p>\n<p>Newspaper clippings.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline had built an archive spanning decades.<\/p>\n<p>At the back stood a metal cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>One drawer was labeled:<\/p>\n<p>CARTER \/ MERCER.<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook as I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a folder bearing my mother&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Another bore mine.<\/p>\n<p>Another:<\/p>\n<p>TWINS \u2014 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Maya stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Birth records.<\/p>\n<p>Nursing logs.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Then a handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline&#39;s writing.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it from childhood birthday cards.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca delivered two healthy girls.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel was present.<\/p>\n<p>He recognized her immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecognized who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret took the note.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel Voss knew your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot casually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey worked together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother wasn&#39;t a doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad had always said Mom worked in accounting before I was born.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother worked at St. Matthew\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily whispered, \u201cGrandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you were born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I searched the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Another note.<\/p>\n<p>This one longer.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca knows nothing.
