I showed them the photograph of Lily and explained enough of the story to make the threat intelligible without trying to make thirteen years of impossible history sound reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>They took the picture as evidence.<\/p>\n<p>One officer asked whether Carl had ever threatened me.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Do you know where your former husband lives?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Has he contacted your daughter?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Not that I know of.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Lily answered from behind me.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He hasn&#39;t.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The officer wrote something down.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Anyone else who might want to frighten your family?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Evelyn Hart.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The name sounded absurdly small compared with everything attached to it.<\/p>\n<p>They promised patrols would pass the house during the night. It wasn&#39;t enough, but it was something.<\/p>\n<p>After they left, I told Lily to pack a bag.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;For where?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Aunt Rachel&#39;s.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#39;m not hiding.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Tonight you are.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Mom.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I took both her hands.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I need you to understand something. Whether this turns out to be a cruel hoax or something worse, somebody photographed you without your knowledge. That part is real.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Her anger faded.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#39;t want you going alone.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I won&#39;t.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Dad spoke from the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#39;m going with her.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked at him with little enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t blame her.<\/p>\n<p>An hour later my sister Rachel collected Lily.<\/p>\n<p>I watched their taillights disappear before closing the door.<\/p>\n<p>Dad and I didn&#39;t sleep.<\/p>\n<p>At dawn, he finally told me the rest of what Carl had shared.<\/p>\n<p>Carl had questioned Emily&#39;s death immediately because the timeline was impossible.<\/p>\n<p>He had seen Emily alive shortly after a doctor told us she had died.<\/p>\n<p>When he demanded to see her body again, staff delayed him.<\/p>\n<p>Later, they produced paperwork bearing a patient number Carl didn&#39;t recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Within days, the physician who had first treated Emily stopped working at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Carl tried locating him.<\/p>\n<p>He couldn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily&#39;s original medical file vanished.<\/p>\n<p>After the photograph of sleeping Lily appeared, Carl panicked.<\/p>\n<p>He believed someone was watching our family.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What did Evelyn have to do with it?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Dad rubbed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Carl believed she worked with somebody investigating irregularities at the hospital.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Police?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#39;t think so.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Then who?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He never explained.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the woman in the gray coat.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What did she say to me?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You told me she asked whether you were Emily&#39;s mother.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>There had been something strange about the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn had asked whether Emily and Lily were identical.<\/p>\n<p>At the time I thought she was making small talk.<\/p>\n<p>Now the question felt surgical.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;She was trying to identify them.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Maybe.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>At seven, we drove to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The building had changed.<\/p>\n<p>The old brick entrance remained, but a glass wing had been added. The pediatric floor where Emily spent her final hours was now administrative space.<\/p>\n<p>I had not entered the building since the night she died.<\/p>\n<p>My body remembered before my mind did.<\/p>\n<p>The antiseptic smell.<\/p>\n<p>The elevator bell.<\/p>\n<p>Rubber soles squeaking across polished floors.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds I was thirty-five again, holding Lily while Carl argued with a nurse because he wanted to see Emily.<\/p>\n<p>Dad touched my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You okay?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>We continued anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Records administration occupied the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Mercer turned out to be a man in his late fifties with silver glasses and an expression that became guarded the instant I gave my name.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We spoke last night.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I remember.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I want Emily&#39;s complete file.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You&#39;ll need authorization.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#39;m her mother.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Identification?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I placed my driver&#39;s license on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>He examined it.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked toward Dad.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Who is he?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;My father.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Mercer disappeared into a back office.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later he returned with a thin folder.<\/p>\n<p>Too thin.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Admission information.<\/p>\n<p>Medication.<\/p>\n<p>A brief physician&#39;s note.<\/p>\n<p>Death certification.<\/p>\n<p>No nursing notes.<\/p>\n<p>No transfer records.<\/p>\n<p>No identification confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This isn&#39;t complete.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#39;s what remains in the archive.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What happened to the rest?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I couldn&#39;t say.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I placed Carl&#39;s notebook on the counter but kept my hand over most of the page.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Which patient number belonged to Emily?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Mercer&#39;s eyes dropped to the visible numbers.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You&#39;ve seen 3079.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I didn&#39;t say that.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You didn&#39;t need to.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He pushed the notebook back.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You should leave.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Why?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Mercer glanced toward the security camera.<\/p>\n<p>Then he lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Because some records disappeared for a reason.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat quickened.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Who was patient 3079?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#39;t know.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Was she dead?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Mercer looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Mrs. Carter, I wasn&#39;t employed here at the time.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Then how do you know there&#39;s something dangerous about that number?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;My daughter was declared dead in this hospital. I now have evidence she may have been alive afterward. Somebody photographed my surviving daughter this week and left a threat outside my house. I&#39;m done walking away because people tell me to.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Mercer&#39;s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he whispered, &quot;There was an internal investigation.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;When?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Years ago.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Into what?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Patient identity discrepancies.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Dad and I exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Children?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Mercer nodded.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;How many?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#39;t know.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Who conducted it?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It never became official.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Why?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Because the administrator who started asking questions died.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The basement suddenly felt colder.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Name?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Mercer hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Evelyn Hart.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You know her.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I knew of her.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What was her position?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Compliance consultant.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Where is she?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#39;t know.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Is she alive?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Mercer looked toward the camera again.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I think so.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He pulled a blank form from beneath the counter and wrote something on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Then he slid it toward me.<\/p>\n<p>An address.<\/p>\n<p>The same address from Carl&#39;s notebook.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Don&#39;t mention my name.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I folded the paper.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Tell me one more thing.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Please.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I showed him the old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The eight-year-old girl.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>His expression became unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Have you seen her?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>But his answer came too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You have.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He pushed the photograph back.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Leave.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Dad caught my arm before I could press harder.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, I pulled free.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He recognized her.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I know.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He&#39;s lying.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I know.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>We drove toward the address near the train station.<\/p>\n<p>It belonged to a narrow brick building that had once housed offices above several shops.<\/p>\n<p>The door to suite 4B was unlocked.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the room was nearly empty.<\/p>\n<p>A desk.<\/p>\n<p>Two chairs.<\/p>\n<p>Dust.<\/p>\n<p>A metal filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had abandoned the place years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>On the wall were faint rectangular marks where pictures had once hung.<\/p>\n<p>Dad opened a drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed scratches on the floor beneath the filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>It had been moved recently.<\/p>\n<p>We pushed it aside.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a small recessed compartment.<\/p>\n<p>Inside lay a brown envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written on it.<\/p>\n<p>Not in Evelyn&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Carl&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>I tore it open.<\/p>\n<p>There were three photographs.<\/p>\n<p>The first showed Emily at approximately eight.<\/p>\n<p>The second showed the same girl several years older.<\/p>\n<p>The third had been taken recently.<\/p>\n<p>A young woman stood beside a lake.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen years old.<\/p>\n<p>I knew before examining her features.<\/p>\n<p>The dimple.<\/p>\n<p>The eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The scar.<\/p>\n<p>On the back was a single name.<\/p>\n<p>Maya.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath it, Carl had written:<\/p>\n<p>I found her.<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>Dad caught me.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;She&#39;s alive.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The words barely came out.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the photograph over again.<\/p>\n<p>There was another note in smaller handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>But Maya isn&#39;t the only child.<\/p>\n<p>A floorboard creaked outside the office.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>A shadow crossed the frosted glass.<\/p>\n<p>Then came three quiet knocks.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t move.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened.<\/p>\n<p>A woman stepped inside.<\/p>\n<p>Dark hair threaded with gray.<\/p>\n<p>Long gray coat.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen years had changed her face.<\/p>\n<p>But not enough.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Evelyn.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>She closed the door behind her.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You weren&#39;t supposed to come here yet.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Where is my daughter?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes settled on the photograph in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Which daughter?&quot;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=24522\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Evelyn Finally Explained the Two Patient Numbers, Then Gave Me an Address Carl Had Risked Thirteen Years to Find<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I locked the door, checked every downstairs window, and called the police.
