People passed around us carrying briefcases and coffee cups. A delivery truck hissed at the curb. Somewhere down the block, a jackhammer hammered steadily into concrete.<\/p>\n<p>The ordinary sounds made Carter\u2019s words feel stranger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake the girls,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He had loosened his tie after the hearing. His expensive navy jacket hung over one arm, and he kept glancing at his phone as though I were delaying him from somewhere important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe and Emma should stay with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey already live primarily with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean permanently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That distinction landed harder.<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked past me toward the courthouse doors before lowering his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJessica is pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew about Jessica.<\/p>\n<p>I had learned about her eight months earlier, though Carter had spent another six weeks insisting she was merely someone helping him with a consulting project. By the time he admitted the affair, he had already moved into a condominium fifteen minutes from his parents\u2019 estate.<\/p>\n<p>What I did not know was that she was pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow far along?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt became important when you brought it up thirty seconds after our divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed then.<\/p>\n<p>Not guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Pride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re having a boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, I honestly thought I had misunderstood him.<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s family had spent years making comments about sons.<\/p>\n<p>His father, Richard Sterling, referred to the Sterling name as though it were an endangered species. His mother, Margaret, had once held newborn Emma and remarked that perhaps \u201cthe third attempt\u201d would finally give Carter someone to carry the family legacy.<\/p>\n<p>Emma had been less than an hour old.<\/p>\n<p>I had never forgotten it.<\/p>\n<p>Neither had Carter, although apparently we remembered it for very different reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo because Jessica is carrying a boy,\u201d I said, \u201cyou don\u2019t need Chloe and Emma anymore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is exactly what you said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled impatiently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always turn everything into an accusation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Carter. Sometimes I simply repeat your sentence slowly enough for you to hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s name flashed across the screen.<\/p>\n<p>He silenced it but did not turn the phone over quickly enough.<\/p>\n<p>Under her name was a message preview.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re waiting for you.<\/p>\n<p>Carter noticed me reading it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have an appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ultrasound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Understanding arrived piece by piece.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>The boy.<\/p>\n<p>The urgency.<\/p>\n<p>His parents.<\/p>\n<p>Of course they were there.<\/p>\n<p>The Sterlings had attended neither Chloe\u2019s spring concert nor Emma\u2019s birthday dinner that year. Margaret had canceled on Emma with forty minutes\u2019 notice because she supposedly had a migraine.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently an ultrasound for the long-awaited grandson required full attendance.<\/p>\n<p>I should have been furious.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, something inside me became remarkably still.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I had exhausted anger during the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps there comes a moment when someone disappoints you so completely that outrage becomes unnecessary. You stop searching for the person you thought you knew because he has finally made himself unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want me to tell them?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Carter frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour daughters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked uncomfortable for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLauren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Tell me. Chloe is eight. Emma is six. When they ask why their father suddenly stopped requesting weekends, what explanation would you like me to give them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not abandoning them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen when are you seeing them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll figure something out once things settle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the baby?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His silence answered.<\/p>\n<p>A black SUV pulled toward the curb.<\/p>\n<p>Carter glanced at it.<\/p>\n<p>His driver.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated, perhaps expecting an argument. During our marriage, Carter had grown accustomed to believing that silence meant surrender.<\/p>\n<p>He had never understood that sometimes silence meant a decision had already been made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLauren,\u201d he said, \u201cthis might actually be easier for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor everyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe girls have always been closer to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey adore you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt more than anything he had said.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Chloe waiting beside the living-room window with her overnight bag because Carter was two hours late for pickup. I remembered Emma practicing a joke all afternoon because she wanted to tell Daddy at dinner.<\/p>\n<p>They had not become \u201ccloser to me\u201d by preference.<\/p>\n<p>They had adapted to his absence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo to your appointment,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Carter blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going to make this difficult?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>That small movement told me everything.<\/p>\n<p>He had expected resistance because resistance would allow him to cast himself as trapped between an unreasonable ex-wife and a new family.<\/p>\n<p>I would not give him that story.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward the courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLauren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded almost cheerful now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really will take them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not tell him where.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca found me ten minutes later in the courthouse lobby.<\/p>\n<p>She carried a gray accordion folder stuffed with copies from the divorce proceedings, financial disclosures, correspondence, and the documents connected to one unresolved matter she had advised me not to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look strange,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m taking the girls to Seattle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, if I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid something happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter told me Jessica is pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith his child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says they\u2019re having a son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something about her expression bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>It was too careful.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca had been a family-law attorney for seventeen years. Very little surprised her, but I had learned to notice when she deliberately concealed a reaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down at the gray folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still waiting for Oakfield to respond to the subpoena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name tightened something in my chest.<\/p>\n<p>Oakfield Fertility Institute.<\/p>\n<p>A chapter of my marriage I had believed closed years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that have to do with Jessica?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say it did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Carter\u2019s financial records contained irregularities, and until Oakfield explains them, I don\u2019t want to speculate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took the folder.<\/p>\n<p>It felt heavier than paper should.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were copies of payments Rebecca\u2019s forensic accountant had discovered during the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Annual storage fees.<\/p>\n<p>Administrative charges.<\/p>\n<p>A recurring identification number.<\/p>\n<p>I had stared at those numbers for weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Carter had told me our remaining embryos had been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>He had shown me a letter proving it.<\/p>\n<p>Yet someone had apparently continued paying to store something at Oakfield.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca touched my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo get Chloe and Emma. I\u2019ll keep working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if Oakfield calls?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll call you immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two hours later, the girls were climbing into my car with backpacks, jackets, and the bewildered excitement children feel when an ordinary school day suddenly becomes an adventure.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe noticed the suitcases first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we going somewhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeattle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma bounced in the back seat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo we get airplane snacks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll negotiate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She considered this acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe was not so easily distracted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Dad know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands tightened around the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows you\u2019re staying with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eight years old, and already too observant.<\/p>\n<p>I met her eyes in the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. He doesn\u2019t know we\u2019re leaving today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the passenger window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he coming later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could have lied.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I said, \u201cYour dad has some things he needs to sort out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>That tiny, adult gesture broke something in me.<\/p>\n<p>At the airport, I bought three one-way tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Seattle was not an escape chosen at random. My sister Natalie lived there.
