placed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike Rebecca\u2019s birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>The technique had not begun in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>It had begun in 1952.<\/p>\n<p>Alter a date.<\/p>\n<p>Seal a record.<\/p>\n<p>Move a child.<\/p>\n<p>Tell everyone the new version until the paperwork becomes reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarlan helped?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd later Ruth used that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Father Harlan had become both accomplice and captive.<\/p>\n<p>It did not absolve him either.<\/p>\n<p>But the machinery finally made sense.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth knew where the bodies of every secret were buried because she had been the first person buried by one.<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s breathing became rough.<\/p>\n<p>Anna stepped closer to the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUncle Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He became silent.<\/p>\n<p>Anna froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A faint sound.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I call tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo would I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before hanging up, Michael said my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Margaret why she left Millfield.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;ll tell you what Ruth did after finding Carol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stared at the name she had written.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>My sister.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly Carol\u2019s biological mother.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly still alive.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere inside her story was another act by Ruth that even Michael had refused to explain.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca picked up her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinding Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her exhausted face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou haven&#39;t slept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither has the family secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost argued.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>No more deciding when she was ready.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca searched.<\/p>\n<p>Anna helped.<\/p>\n<p>Within fifteen minutes, they found several Margaret Ellises in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>One stood out.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Rose Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Age ninety-three.<\/p>\n<p>Former nurse.<\/p>\n<p>Lancaster County.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother named her Margaret Rose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered hearing Michael say Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Not Rose.<\/p>\n<p>But inside Ruth\u2019s jewelry box, I had seen a dried rose pressed beneath a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe coincidence.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>A public directory listed relatives.<\/p>\n<p>One deceased husband.<\/p>\n<p>One son.<\/p>\n<p>And one daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Carol E.
