me.

“Dad?”

“What?”

“You should call him too.”

“Why?”

“He knew Mom.”

“He knew Carol before I did.”

“Exactly.”

I understood.

Michael might know why Carol trusted Ruth.

Why he left.

Why Thomas’s household supposedly needed protection.

Why Ruth’s obsession with the Mercers became so personal.

And perhaps something more important.

Whether Carol’s first loss had shaped everything she later did.

We left the archive shortly before evening.

Outside, the sky had turned gray.

Rebecca stood beside my car.

“You know what’s strange?”

“What?”

“Yesterday I thought the worst thing I could learn was that Mom knew who Anna was.”

“And now?”

“Now I don't know what the worst thing is.”

Anna stood beside her.

“Maybe stop looking for the worst.”

Rebecca glanced at her.

“What should I look for?”

“The truth.”

“That hasn't gone especially well.”

“No.”

Anna smiled faintly.

“But at least it stops changing once everyone has it.”

Rebecca considered that.

Then nodded.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Arizona area code.

I looked toward Anna.

She had given Michael my number through Emily only minutes earlier.

I answered.

“Hello?”

An elderly male voice spoke.

“Walter Miller?”

“Yes.”

“This is Michael Mercer.”

Anna closed her eyes.

I turned on speaker.

Michael continued.

“Before you ask me about Carol, you need to understand something about Ruth.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“She didn’t start controlling our families because of Daniel.”

He coughed hard.

When he recovered, his voice was weaker.

“She started because of what your father discovered about her before he married her.”

I looked toward Anna and Rebecca.

“What did he discover?”

Michael hesitated.

Then said:

“That Ruth had already given away a child of her own.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Michael’s Story About Ruth’s First Child Explained Her
