another answer.

The church.

Or someone inside it.

Someone with enough influence to arrange placements, move children, pressure families, and keep records quiet.

Then Rebecca found a name written repeatedly in small notes tucked behind the photographs.

Father James Harlan.

I knew it.

Everyone in Millfield did.

The Catholic priest who had run St. Agnes Family Services before the agency closed in the nineties.

The same name appeared on Rebecca’s adoption file.

And, according to a faded photocopy in the album, on Emily’s placement papers too.

Rebecca held both documents side by side.

“Same priest.”

“Yes.”

Anna looked at me.

“Was he close to Ruth?”

“Very.”

“How close?”

I thought back.

Father Harlan came to our house often.

Christmas dinners.

Fundraisers.

Long conversations behind closed doors.

My mother called him whenever someone was pregnant, broke, frightened, or in trouble.

At the time, everyone considered that charity.

Now I wondered what kind.

“He’s dead,” I said.

Rebecca’s expression fell.

“When?”

“About fifteen years ago.”

“So another dead person with all the answers.”

“Maybe not all.”

“What do you mean?”

“St. Agnes kept records.”

“Where?”

“The diocesan archive, probably.”

Rebecca was already reaching for her phone.

I stopped her.

“What?”

She looked annoyed.

“You need sleep.”

“No.”

“Rebecca.”

“No more telling me when I'm ready.”

“That isn't what I'm doing.”

“It sounds like it.”

“You've been awake almost thirty hours.”

“So have you.”

Anna intervened.

“He's right.”

Rebecca turned on her.

“Don't start.”

Anna raised both hands.

“I’m not your mother.”

The words landed awkwardly.

Rebecca’s face softened almost immediately.

“I know.”

Then, after a pause:

“Sorry.”

“No need.”

Rebecca looked at the documents again.

“We contact the archive today.”

“Yes.”

“And we find Michael.”

“Yes.”

“And Emily.”

I looked at her.

“Especially Emily.”

My daughter touched the photograph of the little girl with Carol.

“If she’s alive, she deserves to know Mom never forgot her.”

That was the first time Rebecca had spoken about finding someone else’s truth rather than only recovering her own.

I saw something change in her.

Not healing.

Too early.

Direction.

She had spent days discovering what others decided for her.

Now she was choosing what came next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: The Church Archive Contained Two
