11 – The Letters Anna Wrote to a Daughter She Was Forbidden to Know Revealed That Carol Had Once Tried to Return What Ruth Took

Anna sat on the concrete floor of the storage unit with the first envelope in her hands.

Rebecca sat beside her.

I remained several feet away.

The fluorescent light above us hummed.

Somewhere down the corridor, a ventilation fan started.

No place could have been less suited to a reunion.

Yet maybe that was right.

Nothing about this story deserved polished surroundings.

Anna turned the envelope over.

The seal had already been opened.

Carol had read it.

That fact lingered without anyone saying it.

Anna unfolded the paper.

Her younger handwriting looked familiar to me.

Rounder than it was now.

More hurried.

The date at the top was Rebecca’s seventh birthday.

Anna looked toward my daughter.

“I don't remember every word.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Just read it.”

Anna began.

Dear Rebecca,

You don't know me, and I don't know whether anyone will ever give you this letter.

I am someone who knew you for a very short time when you were born.

Anna stopped.

Her voice shook.

Rebecca said nothing.

She continued.

I hope you like books.

I don't know why I imagine that, but I do.

I hope whoever is raising you tells you that you were wanted.

You were.

More than I knew how to explain.

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

Anna kept reading.

She had not called herself Mother.

She had not described the adoption.

She had written like someone terrified that one wrong sentence would cause the letter to be thrown away.

She told Rebecca that she hoped school was kind.

That she hoped someone braided her hair.

That she hoped she laughed loudly.

At the end, she wrote:

If you ever wonder whether the woman who gave birth to you forgot, she didn't.

Rebecca pressed her fingers against her lips.

Anna folded the letter.

“I was afraid if I said too much Ruth would use it as proof I was unstable.”

Rebecca whispered, “She opened it.”

“Yes.”

“Mom.”

“Yes.”

The second letter was written when Rebecca was nine.

This one contained more.

Anna had learned through mutual acquaintances that Rebecca liked horses.

She wrote about a farm where she worked one summer.

She included a small drawing of a horse that looked more like a dog.

Rebecca laughed while crying.

“You can't draw.”

“No.”

“That's terrible.”

“I know.”

“You sent that to a child?”

“I had confidence then.”

Rebecca wiped her face.

“Keep it.”

“You want it?”

“All of them.”

“Of course.”

The third letter came when Rebecca was ten.

The fourth at twelve.

Then thirteen.

Each was different.

Not repetitive.

Anna had tried to imagine a daughter growing without her.

She wrote about music she liked.

Recipes Louise taught her.

Books.

Rainstorms.

The first time she drove alone.

She never demanded contact.

Never told Rebecca she had been stolen.

Never asked her to choose.

The restraint hurt more than anger would have.

By the fifth letter, Rebecca stopped sitting apart from Anna.

Not close.

But closer.

Their shoulders nearly touched.

I noticed.

I said nothing.

Then we reached a letter written when Rebecca was fourteen.

The same year Carol wrote the confession hidden in the cedar box.

Anna opened it.

Her expression changed immediately.

“I remember this one.”

“What?”

“I was angry.”

Rebecca straightened.

“Read it.”

Anna did.

Dear Rebecca,

You are old enough now that people should stop deciding your truth for you.

I have been told repeatedly that contacting you would disrupt your life.

Perhaps that is true.

But I no longer believe silence is automatically kindness.

I loved your father.

He may not know you are biologically his.

Rebecca looked toward me.

Anna continued.

Your adoptive mother knows who I am.

I believe she knows more about the circumstances of your adoption than you have been told.

If this letter reaches you, please understand I am not asking you to leave anyone.

I am asking that someday you be allowed to know where you came from.

Rebecca's face hardened.

“Mom read this.”

“Yes.”

“She was fourteen too when she wrote her letter to me.”

I checked the dates.

Carol’s confession had been written six weeks later.

“That letter caused Mom to write hers,” Rebecca said.

It seemed likely.

Anna looked sick.

“She almost told you.”

“Almost doesn't count.”

“No.”

Rebecca lifted the next envelope.

But before opening it, she noticed something tucked between two letters.

Not an envelope.

A folded note.

Carol’s handwriting.

She opened it.

Anna,

I received your letters.

I have kept them.

I know I have no right to ask anything of you, but please give me time.

Rebecca is happy.

Walter adores her.

If I tell them everything now, I may destroy the only family she has known.

I intend to tell her when she is older.

I swear I will.

C.

Anna stared at the note.

“I never got this.”

Rebecca looked toward me.

“Mom wrote back.”

“Apparently.”

“But didn't send it.”

“No.”

Anna shook her head.

“She kept both sides of the conversation inside this suitcase.”

It was one of the saddest descriptions of Carol I had heard.

She had written apologies she never mailed.

Saved truth she never delivered.

Made promises only to paper.

Rebecca turned the note over.

There was more.

I know what Ruth did to you was wrong.

I know what I did was wrong.

I cannot return the years already gone.

But I will not let Rebecca reach adulthood without knowing you exist.

My daughter laughed bitterly.

“I was fourteen.”

Anna closed her eyes.

“She had four years.”

“Then twenty more.”

“Yes.”

The next letter from Anna was written when Rebecca turned sixteen.

Another at eighteen.

Carol kept them all.

The eighteenth birthday letter was longer.

Anna wrote that Rebecca was legally an adult now.

She provided a phone number.

An address.

And a simple request.

If you ever want to know me, call.

If you do not, I will respect that too.

Rebecca stared at the phone number.

“You lived at this address?”

“For eleven years.”

“So if Mom had given me this—”

“You could have found me.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I would've called.”

Anna looked at her.

“You don't know that.”

“I do.”

“How?”

“Because I was obsessed with my adoption at eighteen.”

I remembered.

Rebecca had asked constantly.

About medical history.

Her ancestry.

Why the records were sealed.

Carol always told her the birth mother requested privacy.

I said so.

Anna looked stunned.

“I never requested privacy.”

“We know.”

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“I asked Mom once if I could hire someone.”

I remembered that too.

“She cried.”

“Yes.”

“You decided not to.”

“Because I thought I was hurting her.”

Anna stared down at the letter.

“She made your empathy protect her secret.”

Rebecca flinched.

“That sounds harsh.”

“It is harsh.”

“I know.”

Anna looked toward her.

“I'm sorry.”

“No.”

Rebecca folded the letter.

“It's true.”

For a while, nobody spoke.

Then I picked up another envelope.

The postmark was from Rebecca’s twenty-first birthday.

Carol had opened it.

Anna had included a photograph.

Herself at twenty-three holding a newborn.

Rebecca.

The first photograph we had ever seen of them together.

Rebecca took it.

Her entire body went still.

Anna leaned over.

“Oh.”

“You forgot this?”

“I thought it was lost.”

The photograph showed Anna in a hospital bed.

Exhausted.

Hair damp.

Face swollen from crying or labor.

Rebecca lay against her chest wrapped in the pink blanket Anna had described.

My daughter touched the edge.

“That’s me.”

“Yes.”

“I've never seen a picture from before Dad and Mom picked me up.”

“No.”

“You kept one?”

“My mother took it.”

Rebecca studied Anna's face.

“You look terrified.”

“I was.”

“You also look happy.”

“I was.”

Again both could be true.

That had become the central lesson of our family.

Love and fear.

Grief and gratitude.

Betrayal and tenderness.

All coexisting where simpler stories would have preferred one emotion.

Rebecca handed me the photograph.

I stared.

The baby was unmistakably her.

And Anna looked almost exactly as I remembered her before everything broke apart.

My chest tightened so badly I had to look away.

Rebecca noticed.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You're lying.”

“I'll survive.”

Anna looked toward me.

For one second, forty years collapsed.

Then she lowered her eyes.

The next letter was written when Rebecca was twenty-five.

Another at thirty.

Then thirty-five.

The final envelope had been mailed three years earlier.

Carol had opened it.

Anna wrote less by then.

Not because she cared less.

Because hope had changed shape.

I don't know whether these letters are reaching you.

I suspect they are not.

I have decided this will be the last one.

If you never contact me, I will assume either you chose not to or someone chose for you.

I hope it was you.

That sentence broke Rebecca.

She stood and walked out of the unit.

Anna started to rise.

I stopped her gently.

“Let me.”

She nodded.

I found Rebecca outside near the car.

She was crying hard.

I stood beside her.

After several minutes, she said, “I didn't choose.”

“I know.”

“She hoped I chose.”

“Yes.”

“I didn't even know.”

“I know.”

“How could Mom do that?”

There was nothing I could say.

Rebecca wiped her face.

“She loved me.”

“Yes.”

“I hate hearing myself say that now.”

“Why?”

“Because it sounds like I'm defending her.”

“It isn't.”

“She lied about everything.”

“Yes.”

“She also stayed up all night when I had pneumonia.”

“Yes.”

“She drove six hours when I broke up with Nathan in college.”

“Yes.”

“She made cupcakes for my class.”

“Yes.”

“She intercepted letters from my biological mother.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“I hate this.”

“So do I.”

She looked toward the storage unit.

“Anna was right.”

“About what?”

“Two things can be true.”

“Yes.”

“I hate that too.”

We went back inside.

Anna was holding the photograph of herself and Rebecca.

When my daughter entered, Anna immediately set it down.

Rebecca sat beside her.

“Can I ask something?”

“Anything.”

“Why did you stop at thirty-five?”

Anna thought.

“Because I was tired of writing into a wall.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Did you give up?”

“No.”

“What’s the difference?”

“I stopped expecting an answer.”

Rebecca looked down.

“That makes sense.”

She picked up the stack.

“These are mine now.”

“Yes.”

“All of them.”

“Yes.”

“And the photograph.”

“Of course.”

Rebecca gathered everything carefully.

Then she noticed another small envelope at the bottom of the suitcase.

No stamp.

No address.

Only a name.

Anna.

Carol’s handwriting again.

Anna looked at it.

“That’s for me.”

Rebecca handed it over.

“You should open it.”

Anna hesitated.

“Here?”

“Yes.”

Anna opened the envelope.

The letter inside was dated six months before Carol’s cancer diagnosis.

Recent.

Not decades old.

Carol had written it long after the earlier unsent note.

Anna read silently.

Her hands began trembling.

“What?” I asked.

She did not answer.

Rebecca leaned closer.

“Anna?”

Anna looked toward me.

“She tried to find me.”

My heart stopped.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“What?”

Carol had written:

I drove to Pittsburgh today.

I sat outside your house for almost an hour.

I wanted to knock.

I wanted to tell you everything.

I did not.

Cowardice has become a habit so old I sometimes mistake it for personality.

Anna covered her eyes.

“She was outside my house.”

Rebecca whispered, “Mom went to see you?”

“She didn't come inside.”

Carol’s letter continued.

She confessed that Rebecca was thriving.

Married.

Two sons.

Working at the hospital.

She included no address because she feared giving Anna access without Rebecca’s consent.

Yet she admitted knowing that distinction was hypocritical after decades of withholding letters.

Then came something none of us expected.

I have kept every letter you wrote.

I have also kept something Ruth never knew I had.

A copy of the original adoption file.

Not the altered version.

The real one.

Rebecca looked toward me.

“The original?”

We searched the suitcase again.

Nothing.

Anna continued reading.

Carol had hidden the file somewhere else because she feared Ruth might search the house.

She described the location indirectly.

Where Walter keeps the first promise he ever made me.

I frowned.

Rebecca looked at me.

“What promise?”

“I don't know.”

Anna continued.

If I die before I tell them, this clue may be all I leave.

Walter will understand.

I stared at the words.

Where I keep the first promise I ever made Carol.

Memory moved slowly at first.

Then all at once.

Our first anniversary.

We had no money.

Carol gave me a watch.

I gave her a handwritten promise instead of jewelry.

A promise that someday I would build her a garden.

Years later, when we bought this house, I did.

Backyard.

Far corner.

Rose bed.

Stone bench.

Rebecca saw recognition on my face.

“What?”

“The garden.”

“What garden?”

“Your mother’s roses.”

Rebecca frowned.

“She hated those roses.”

“No.”

“She complained about them constantly.”

“She complained because deer ate them.”

Anna stood.

“The file is outside?”

“I think so.”

We drove home
