I think Martha was in the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the evening.<\/p>\n<p>David had been drinking bourbon.<\/p>\n<p>He made several comments about estate taxes and inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>I had ignored them because I thought he was being obnoxious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Sarah do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joanne looked miserable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told him to shut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morales wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat could mean a lot of things,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Or nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Again, uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>But the joke now sat differently in my memory.<\/p>\n<p>At our next supervised meeting, Sarah entered knowing prosecutors had confronted her about the insurance emails.<\/p>\n<p>She looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew there was a policy application.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know it was a million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought David was insuring your financial role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat financial role?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if something happened to you, the family would lose support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A strange laugh escaped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he insured the loss of the money you were taking from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how that sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sounds accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know Horizon Cedar was the beneficiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know I was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know I hadn\u2019t agreed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign anyway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause by then I had already done so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I stopped one thing, David said everything else would unravel. The Florida house. The loan. The investor money. All of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. That explains why stopping became difficult. It doesn\u2019t explain why you started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I thought I deserved what you had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bluntness surprised both of us.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Dad had spent years choosing you over me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was his marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You knew it then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flinched.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were an adult, Sarah.
