true?”

Silence.

The entire courtroom held still.

Evelyn looked at Lawson.

Then Maria.

Then me.

Finally:

“I don’t know what I believed in that minute.”

Webb did not push.

Smart.

She moved to something simpler.

“Mrs. Voss, when David was lying injured in the road, who had the power to call for help?”

“Everyone.”

“Who had the power to order your people to help him?”

“I did.”

“Who had the power to tell them to leave him?”

“I did.”

“Who decided what happened?”

Defense objected.

The judge allowed answer if she understood.

Evelyn stared at Webb.

Then:

“I did.”

Same words.

But this time no recording.

No nineteen-year-old voice guiding her.

Under oath.

In court.

Webb asked:

“Why?”

Evelyn’s face changed.

Not collapse.

Something smaller.

Exhaustion.

“Because I thought if David exposed us, everything good we had ever done would disappear.”

Webb waited.

“And did that give you the right to decide whether he received help?”

“No.”

“Did you know that then?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled for the first time.

“Yes.”

There.

Not confusion.

Not rules.

Not panic.

Knowledge.

“Then why did you do it?”

Evelyn whispered:

“Because by then I could not tell the difference between protecting the work and protecting myself.”

No one moved.

That was the story.

Not an excuse.

An admission of corruption more profound than stolen money.

The mission and the self had fused.

Webb returned to counsel table.

“No further questions.”

Evelyn stepped down later without looking at me.

I expected triumph.

Nothing.

Only sadness.

Because the woman who helped Maria had been real.

The woman who left David had also been real.

One did not erase the other.

Outside, reporters shouted.

I walked past.

No statement.

No cameras.

Emily waited in the car.

“How bad?”

she asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You always say that now.”

“I’m improving.”

She smiled.

Then handed me a coffee.

“Court coffee is criminal.”

“Careful. We’ve had enough crimes.”

She groaned.

“That was terrible.”

“Caleb would approve.”

“No, he wouldn’t.”

We drove home.

For once, nobody followed.

No anonymous message.

No hidden car.

No agent calling.

At a red light, I looked out at pedestrians crossing.

Ordinary people.

Carrying groceries.

Arguing.

Laughing.

Going somewhere.

I realized I had spent nearly two years living inside other people’s decisions.

David’s.

Caleb’s.

Evelyn’s.

Thomas’s.

Samuel’s.

Soon the jury would make another.

But after that, whatever happened, I would have decisions of my own.

Not investigative ones.

Life ones.

That frightened me more than court.

Click here to continue reading: PART 32: While the Jury Deliberated, Emily Asked Me to Leave Caleb’s Heart Behind, and the Verdict Answered Only One Kind of Question

No one expected Evelyn to testify.
