behind a loose wall panel, a weatherproof document case.

David had hidden it.

Inside:

Copies of early Meridian vendor records.

Handwritten notes.

A disposable camera.

Two cassette tapes.

And a sealed envelope.

On the front:

CLAIRE.

My breath disappeared.

David had written my name.

Ten years.

A letter had been sitting beneath an abandoned gym while I learned how to live without him.

Singh warned me it was evidence.

It would be scanned.

Tested.

Documented.

Then, if permitted, I could read it.

I waited four hours.

Longest four hours of my life.

The letter began:

Claire,

If you’re reading this, then either I finally became dramatic enough to justify all those detective novels you hate, or something went wrong.

I laughed through tears.

That was David.

Not solemn.

Not prophetic.

Him.

He wrote that he had found financial records he did not trust himself to interpret alone.

He had made copies.

He did not want them in our house.

Not because he expected violence.

Because he feared subpoenas, searches, professional retaliation.

He thought the people involved would try to discredit him.

He did not imagine death.

That mattered.

He was cautious.

Not suicidal.

Not knowingly sacrificing himself.

He expected to come home.

The letter continued.

If I haven’t explained this to you myself, take the box to Alan Price.

There was Price.

Then:

Do not investigate it yourself.

I stopped.

Singh raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t.”

I said.

She almost smiled.

David continued.

You are smarter than me in at least nine ways, but your curiosity becomes reckless when someone tells you no.

I laughed harder.

He knew.

Then:

Caleb gets that from you.

My chest broke open.

Caleb had been twelve when David wrote it.

Already curious.

Already ours.

David described the Bridge Accounts.

Not the full history.

He suspected some began as legitimate assistance work.

He had found families helped.

He also found vendors receiving more than they delivered.

He worried exposing everything publicly would harm families.

Same problem Caleb later encountered.

Father and son independently reached the same ethical boundary.

Protect evidence.

Protect victims.

Do not dump private records indiscriminately.

Then David wrote something that changed the room.

Peter Lawson may be lying to me.

I looked up.

Singh leaned closer.

David had suspected.

He noticed Lawson sometimes provided information immediately before Meridian changed procedures.

Too convenient.

As if David was being shown old weaknesses while current ones moved.

He planned to test Lawson with false information.

“What false information?”

I asked.

The letter answered.

David told Lawson he had placed originals with Price.

He had not.

That was why Harold later told Evelyn David had copies with Price.

The lie traveled.

Proof Lawson was reporting.

David knew before the lake.

“Then why meet him again?”

Because he wanted to identify who Lawson reported to.

David was setting his own trap.

That scared me.

Not reckless exactly.

But dangerous.

He thought professional fraud.

Not homicide.

He planned to meet Lawson, then confront Price with results.

He never got the chance.

The cassette tapes documented phone calls.

One with Lawson.

One with Harold.

The Lawson call contained David’s false statement about Price.

The Harold call came later.

Harold warned:

Stop testing Peter.

David:

So you know.

Harold:

I know enough.

David:

Who does he work for?

Harold:

You already know.

David:

Evelyn?

Silence.

Then Harold:

Go home.

That tape corroborated everything.

But the disposable camera contained something stranger.

Developed photographs.

Not the lake.

A warehouse.

NorthBridge signage.

Vehicles.

Men unloading boxes.

One photograph showed Martin Vale.

Another Marcus.

Another man investigators identified as Charles Wynn’s former business partner.

But Charles Wynn had supposedly died decades earlier.

The man could simply resemble him.

Investigators began checking.

Then one photograph showed Evelyn meeting a woman.

Older.

Gray hair.

Unknown.

On the back, David wrote:

E.V. + L.C. 4/12.

L.C.

Lydia Crane.

State vital records supervisor.

The starred control-list asset.

David had photographed Evelyn meeting the woman who later enabled false identities and death records.

That tied the identity infrastructure to Evelyn before Thomas’s disappearance.

Important.

Then Singh noticed the envelope had a second page stuck inside.

David’s writing.

Short.

Claire, if this turns out to be nothing, please never tell me how ridiculous this box was.

I smiled.

Then:

If it is something, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.

My eyes filled.

He knew secrecy was wrong.

He had intended temporary silence.

Then:

I kept telling myself I was protecting you and Caleb from worry. That may just be another way of saying I wanted to control what you knew.

I stopped reading.

There.

David had understood the problem before he died.

Protection becoming control.

Exactly what the entire story had become.

Evelyn controlled information because she believed others could not be trusted with decisions.

Thomas hid because he believed Rachel was safer ignorant.

Samuel lied.

Harold withheld.

Caleb investigated secretly because he feared I would stop him.

And David had done a smaller version.

Different stakes.

Different morality.

Same temptation.

I continued.

If I’m wrong, I owe you an apology.

If I’m right, I owe you a bigger one.

Then:

Come home whenever you can.

That phrase again.

The letter Caleb later received from David’s stored materials contained the same idea.

Come home.

Not location.

Relationship.

David had written it twice.

I folded the copy carefully.

“Anything else?”

I asked.

Singh looked strange.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Someone else opened the locker.”

My pulse jumped.

“When?”

“We found disturbed dust patterns and a recent envelope.”

“Recent?”

“Within the last year.”

Caleb.

I knew before she said it.

Inside the document case, beneath David’s letter, investigators found a small white envelope.

Different handwriting.

CALEB.

No.

It said:

MOM — IF YOU FIND THIS AFTER ME, DAD WAS RIGHT.

My hands shook.

Caleb had found the locker.

“How?”

His files explained.

He traced the missing key photograph.

Could not access the key.

So how did he open it?

He didn’t.

The cage itself had an old combination latch in addition to the hidden document case.

David’s key opened the case.

Caleb could enter the cage but not the locked case.

He found the case.

Could not open it without damaging evidence.

So he left it.

And left me a note.

Mom,

I found Dad’s locker but not the key.
