recently?”

Silence.

“Elaine.”

“Three months ago.”

My pulse jumped.

“What did she ask?”

“Whether Caleb still had David’s things.”

There it was.

Evelyn had been tracing evidence through family months before Caleb died.

“What did you say?”

“I told her I didn’t know.”

“Was that true?”

“Yes.”

“Anything else?”

“She asked whether David ever kept tapes.”

My hands went cold.

Recorder.

Evelyn knew it existed but not where.

That explained the theft from Jonathan later.

“Did you tell Caleb?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was ashamed.”

Of course.

Shame maintained the system almost as efficiently as fear.

Elaine had spent ten years silent because admitting one old betrayal felt worse than letting questions remain unanswered.

I did not forgive her.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

But I understood the mechanism.

Lawson watched all of this from interview.

Then finally broke.

Maybe he realized the control list had stripped away his leverage.

Maybe the network was collapsing faster than his bargaining strategy.

He gave the six identities Evelyn had prepared.

Elizabeth Vaughn.

Margaret Hale.

Judith Rowan.

Carol Bennett.

Eleanor Price.

And one name that made Alan Price stare.

“Eleanor Price?”

No relation.

But deliberately chosen?

Maybe to create confusion.

Lawson continued.

The identity Evelyn used most recently was Judith Rowan.

Medical consultant.

Seventy-one.

Registered address near Charleston.

Passport current.

Bank accounts active.

Vehicle.

Insurance.

All legally documented through fraudulent source records built years earlier.

“Where would she go as Rowan?”

The prosecutor asked.

Lawson hesitated.

Then:

“Canada.”

“Why?”

“She has property.”

“Where?”

“Nova Scotia.”

Agents began coordination immediately.

But Lawson shook his head.

“She won’t go yet.”

“Why?”

“She doesn’t leave unfinished witnesses.”

“Who remains?”

“Harold.”

Protected.

“Thomas.”

Protected.

“Marian.”

Protected.

“Claire?”

Lawson looked toward the camera.

“No.”

“Rachel?”

“No.”

“Emily?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

His expression tightened.

“Daniel.”

I had almost forgotten.

Daniel Vale.

Cooperating.

Holding current Meridian records.

Living bridge between old fraud and new.

A witness with direct knowledge of current transactions.

And perhaps the person Evelyn considered most disloyal.

“Where is he?”

Singh asked.

Federal safe location.

Supposedly.

She called.

No answer.

Another agent tried.

Nothing.

Then word came.

Daniel had left protection.

Voluntarily.

Thirty-five minutes earlier.

He told agents he was meeting his attorney.

He never arrived.

My stomach tightened.

“Did Evelyn contact him?”

Unknown.

Then Daniel texted me.

One sentence.

I know where she is.

Another arrived.

Don’t tell Singh yet.

I stared at it.

The old instinct returned.

Secret.

Private meeting.

One person believing he could manage danger alone.

David.

Caleb.

Thomas.

Reeves.

Now Daniel.

I showed Singh immediately.

No hesitation.

No delay.

Caleb’s lesson had finally stuck.

Singh read the message.

Then smiled without humor.

“Good.”

“What?”

“She wants him to think you’ll keep the secret.”

“So?”

“Let’s disappoint
