was who she was.

Not rage.

Not panic.

Calculation.

Then Caleb asked about Thomas.

“Why keep him alive?”

“Because unlike your profit.

Fear.

Convenience.

Silence.

Evelyn coordinated, but the system had grown beyond one person.

“Then why does everyone fear you?”

Caleb asked.

“Because I remember where the bodies are.”

Literal or figurative, the phrase hung there.

“David’s?”

“Yes.”

Another direct connection.

Caleb changed tone.

“You’re not going to touch my mother.”

For the first time, Evelyn sounded almost warm.

“I have no reason to.”

“If I die?”

“You are going to die.”

The cruelty was casual.

Caleb did not react.

“If I die, she might find this.”

“Then perhaps you shouldn’t leave it.”

“I already did.”

Silence.

That had been his bluff.

Maybe not even bluff.

He was building exactly this trail.

Evelyn asked:

“What did you leave?”

Caleb laughed softly.

“You taught everyone else not to answer that question.”

The recording ended.

I stared at the table.

Marian spoke.

“He gave me a copy because he thought Evelyn would move Thomas once she realized he knew too much.”

“He was right.”

“Yes.”

“Did Evelyn know you had this?”

“No.”

“Does she now?”

Marian’s face Singh’s phone rang.

Hospital.

Emily.

Rachel.

Something had happened.

She put the call on speaker.

Rachel’s voice came
