why.

“I don’t want Dad in prison.”

“I know.”

“Make him come out.”

“I can’t.”

“You’re his restorative-justice program available through the correctional system.

Not with Mom automatically.

Not with Khloe.

The program allowed harmed parties to choose whether to him?”

“Maybe.”

“Why?”

“That is the question.”

She sat.

“I don’t want why?”

Mom looked at her hands.

“I want to ask something.”

“What?”

“Why me?”

The simplest question.

The one she had answered intellectually many times.

Accessible.

Trusting.

Close.

But not from him.

She wanted his answer.

“Do you think he’ll tell about forgiving.

It was about choosing to look once, on her terms.

“What does the program require?”

Preliminary meetings.

Screening.

Facilitator.

No direct contact until both sides approved.

Mom could stop at any point.

That last part mattered.

Can I stop?

Grace’s question echoed.

Yes.

Choice restored across generations.

Mom completed the initial meeting.

Then another.

Weeks passed.

She decided to proceed.

Khloe struggled.

“You don’t owe him this.”

“I know.”

“What if he manipulates you?”

“I leave.”

“What if he cries?”

“He cries.”

“What if you forgive him?”

Mom looked at her.

“Would that upset you?”

Khloe started to answer.

Stopped.

Then said, “Maybe.”

Mom nodded.

“That would be yours to handle.”

The sentence had traveled full circle.

When the day came, Mom went without us.

Facilitator only.

No family.

No Harrison.

No audience.

I hated waiting.

So did Khloe.

We did not call.

Mom returned three hours later.

She looked exhausted.

I was at her house with Khloe and Grace.

Grace ran to her.

Mom hugged her.

Then sat.

No one asked.

Finally she said, “You can ask.”

Khloe whispered, “Why you?”

Mom looked toward the backyard.

“He said because I trusted him.”

Silence.

“He said because Natalie was away.”

I looked down.

“Because Khloe would defend him.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

“And because the house made him believe there was more money than there was.”

Nothing surprising.

But hearing him say it mattered.

Mom continued.

“He said once he took the first money and nothing happened, he felt smarter.”

That chilled me.

“Then he kept needing the next lie to protect the last.”

Yes.

The escalation.

Exactly what records showed.

Mom asked him about the keys.

He admitted moving them.

The glasses.

Yes.

Messages.

Yes.

Frank’s letters.

He found them while searching Dad’s boxes.

Why keep them?

Because they showed Dad had hidden financial matters before and he thought they might become useful.

Everything became leverage to him.

Mom asked whether he put medication in her tea.

His answer did not change.

No.

He ordered it.

He planned to use the existence of a prescription as evidence.

He said he never secretly administered it.

Mom believed he might be telling the truth.

Not because she trusted him.

Because by then he had admitted things that harmed him and still denied that one.

Could still be a lie.

Unresolved remained unresolved.

Then Mom asked the question Khloe did not expect.

“Did you ever love us?”

Julian apparently cried.

Mom did not.

He said he loved Khloe.

He cared about Mom.

He admired me and resented me.

And he convinced himself that if the financial plan succeeded, everyone would eventually forgive the methods because no one would lose the house permanently.

I almost laughed.

“He thought nobody would really lose it?”

“He said he planned to refinance, stabilize the businesses, then keep the house in the family.”

Mom shook her head.

“He still had a story where he was fixing things.”

That was the most dangerous part.

People rarely narrate themselves as villains.

Julian
