copied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Lawson alter his medical care?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Voss forbade it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence made me sick.<\/p>\n<p>Not because they had harmed Caleb.<\/p>\n<p>Because it implied the possibility had been discussed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy forbid it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Singh\u2019s hand tightened on my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator disappeared for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>I saw Caleb in his hospital bed.<\/p>\n<p>Cold fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Oxygen mask.<\/p>\n<p>His insistence that nobody caused his illness.<\/p>\n<p>He had been right.<\/p>\n<p>And still they had spoken about his death as though waiting for a delayed invoice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone interfere with his treatment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator asked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAppointment calls?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawson arranged one fake call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedication packaging?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSearch of his room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably Lawson\u2019s contractor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotographs outside Claire Mercer\u2019s home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome were from the surveillance team Daniel hired. Some weren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, two sources.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb had suspected that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had the second surveillance team?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>Harold Voss had been watching us personally through intermediaries.<\/p>\n<p>Not because of Caleb\u2019s illness.<\/p>\n<p>Because Caleb had reached too close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the anonymous messages after Caleb died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be Kessler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be Voss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Voss doesn\u2019t threaten people before he decides what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Singh looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>The messages may have come from someone panicking.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Kessler.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Lawson.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps even Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>But Voss was colder.<\/p>\n<p>More patient.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus then said something that shifted the interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re wasting time with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Kessler is trying to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigators leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me for a passport contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere would he go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably Cayman first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Financial haven.<\/p>\n<p>Bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he have the recorder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould he take them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo dangerous crossing borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward the glass again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomewhere Voss can retrieve them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator\u2019s patience hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Ellison, this is the moment where cooperation becomes measurable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus smiled weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I don\u2019t know that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he gave them an address.<\/p>\n<p>Not Kessler\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>Not NorthBridge.<\/p>\n<p>A private records warehouse outside the city.<\/p>\n<p>Voss had used it for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes.<\/p>\n<p>Financial records.<\/p>\n<p>Contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Things too dangerous to digitize.<\/p>\n<p>The recorder might be there.<\/p>\n<p>So might the sealed letter.<\/p>\n<p>Singh left immediately to make calls.<\/p>\n<p>I remained with Price and Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>On-screen, Marcus kept talking.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>Obstruction.<\/p>\n<p>Bribery.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted allowing stolen medical aid to continue because exposure would destroy his career.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted helping suppress Thomas\u2019s complaint.<\/p>\n<p>But he continued denying direct involvement in David\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Then the investigator asked:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho taught Richard Kessler to steal from sick children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stared at the tabletop.<\/p>\n<p>The anonymous message had used exactly that wording.<\/p>\n<p>Ask Marcus Ellison who taught Richard Kessler how to steal from sick children.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus raised his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler was twenty-four when Harold hired him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo find ways to move restricted charity money without triggering bank review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Design from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Voss benefit financially?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMassively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did the money go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOffshore trusts. Consulting companies. Political foundations.
