David died until I could no longer bear it.

Caleb knew.

I opened the plastic case.

The tape was inside.

So was something else.

A microSD card taped beneath the paper insert.

My knees weakened.

“There.”

Singh put on gloves.

She photographed it before removing it.

A technical investigator inserted the screen.

LEDGER.

EMAILS.

FAMILIES.

BACKUP.

A final folder.

FOR MOM.

Singh stopped me before I opened anything.

“We need to copy.

The LEDGER folder contained 186 photographs.

Every page of the green book.

Caleb had copied it completely.

The earliest entries were fifteen years old.

Names.

Initials.

Amounts.

Percentages.

Hospitals.

Shell companies.

Meridian appeared repeatedly.

So did Marcus Ellison.

Martin Vale.

Michael Rourke.

Richard Kessler.

Samuel appeared too, but differently.

His entries were smaller.

Marked S.H.—info.

Payments for information.

Corrupt, yes.

But not architect.

Kessler’s initials appeared beside bank transfers.

R.K.—clear.

R.K.—move.

R.K.—new account.

Price leaned over the screen.

“This is what we needed.”

Singh book was not proof by itself.

But it was a map.

Then we reached the newer pages.

The handwriting changed.

Martin had apparently stopped maintaining the ledger years before his death.

Someone else continued it.

Daniel?

I looked closer.

Different ink.

Different writing.

Same structure.

NorthBridge appeared.

Meridian remained.

Hospitals changed.

Grant programs changed.

But percentages continued.

Money still disappeared.

Caleb had added digital annotations beside many images.

Public record matches.

Family confirmations.

Invoice discrepancies.

He had done extraordinary work.

Too much work.

Alone.

Then I noticed one hospital name.

St. Catherine Medical Center.

Caleb’s hospital.

My stomach tightened.

“Stop.”

The investigator paused.

“Go back.”

A page showed payments connected to St. Catherine.

Not oncology treatment.

Charitable grants.

Equipment vendors.

Patient assistance funds.

NorthBridge.

Meridian.

I felt suddenly cold.

“Caleb was phone returned.

Ask his mother what really killed him.

He was investigating Meridian when he got sick again.

I had dismissed them as manipulation.

Maybe they were.

But now Caleb’s own hospital appeared in the ledger.

“Search his folder.”

The FAMILIES folder contained dozens of cases.

The EMAILS folder contained correspondence with parents.

The BACKUP folder duplicated most of it.

FOR MOM required another password.

The hint read:

Worst movie ever.

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

Caleb and I had argued for years about a science-fiction movie he loved and I hated.

I typed its title.

The folder opened.

Inside were four audio files and a text document.

The document began:

Mom, if you found this, then either I finally told you everything or things went badly.

My eyes burned.

Singh asked whether I wanted privacy.

“No.”

Not anymore.

Caleb wrote that he had copied the ledger from Daniel Vale.

That confirmed it.

Daniel contacted him after realizing Caleb had traced current Meridian transactions.

Daniel claimed he had found the green ledger among Martin’s private possessions after his father’s death.

He kept it because it gave him leverage against Richard Kessler.

Daniel insisted he had tried to clean up Meridian’s operations.

Caleb did not believe him completely.

Neither did I.

Daniel admitted current fraudulent transactions still occurred.

He claimed Kessler controlled them through NorthBridge contracts.

Daniel said resisting would expose his father’s crimes and implicate him in later cover-ups.

So he cooperated.

Another Samuel.

Different generation.

Different excuse.

Same cowardice.

Caleb wrote:

I think Daniel wants out, but wanting out isn’t the same as doing the right thing.

That sounded like my son.

Then the document changed.

He described something happening after he confronted Kessler.

My pulse quickened.

“When did he confront him?”

Singh checked the date.

Seven weeks before Caleb died.

Caleb had emailed Kessler through NorthBridge.

He asked about specific accounts.

Kessler responded through an attorney.

Stop contacting us.

Then Caleb received an anonymous call.

The caller knew his diagnosis.

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

Rachel whispered.

Caleb wondered the same thing.

He assumed Kessler had learned through hospital connections.

The caller told him:

You have enough problems. Focus on staying alive.

I closed my eyes.

A threat disguised as advice.

Then Caleb wrote about a treatment appointment.

Six weeks before his death, he arrived for an infusion.

A nurse noticed his medication bag had a different pharmacy label than usual.

The dose was correct.

The drug was correct.

But the packaging discrepancy bothered Caleb.

He asked questions.

Hospital staff investigated.

They concluded the pharmacy had changed suppliers.

No harm documented.

I breathed again.

Maybe nothing.

Then another incident.

A week later, someone called pretending to be from his oncology office and told him an appointment had been moved.

Caleb called the clinic directly.

It had not.

Again, no harm.

But somebody knew his schedule.

Then his room was searched.

Three incidents.

Information.

Access.

Surveillance.

Still no proof anyone harmed him medically.

Caleb himself wrote:

I don’t think they caused my cancer or the treatment failure.
