Let investigators do the rest.

I had obeyed without knowing I was obeying.

For ten years.

Then our son had undone the silence.

The letter shifted.

David wrote directly about Caleb.

He had taken our nine-year-old fishing the weekend before.

Caleb had complained the worms smelled.

He had asked why adults always said bravery meant not being scared.

David told him bravery was usually being scared and doing the necessary thing anyway.

I covered my mouth.

That was Caleb.

Every bit of him.

David wrote:

He watches everything I do. That frightens me more than the men I’m investigating. Children copy what we show them, not what we tell them.

My vision blurred.

He had been right in a way he could never have imagined.

Caleb had grown into the same kind of stubborn young man.

Given a mystery involving someone vulnerable, he could not leave it alone.

Given danger, he documented it.

Given fear, he hid it from the people he loved.

Just like his father.

Then came David’s warning.

If Caleb ever learns about this when he is older, do not let him make my mistake.

I stopped.

My heart began pounding.

What mistake?

The next paragraph answered.

David believed he had waited too long to involve authorities because he wanted complete proof.

He wanted a perfect case.

Every name.

Every account.

Every document.

That desire had allowed the people involved time to realize he was investigating.

I should have taken what I had to Price earlier.

Instead, I kept digging.

If Caleb ever inherits my stubbornness, remind him that knowing when to ask for help is part of courage too.

I could not continue for several minutes.

Caleb had repeated it exactly.

He had investigated alone.

Contacted Daniel.

Visited Meridian.

Followed financial records.

Hidden evidence.

And told me almost nothing.

I had spent the last days admiring how careful he had been.

Now David’s letter forced me to see the other side.

Caleb had been brave.

He had also been nineteen.

Sick.

Vulnerable.

And facing people who had already demonstrated what they would do to protect money.

I finished the letter.

David told me he loved me.

He told me none of what happened next would be my fault.

He asked me not to turn his choices into a burden Caleb had to carry.

That request arrived ten years too late.

Our son had carried it anyway.

The final line was simple.

Tell him his dad came home every time he could.

I lowered the tablet.

For several moments, I heard nothing but the faint hum of fluorescent lights.

Then I cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

I sat on an overturned plastic bin and cried with both hands covering my face.

Ten years of questions had not prepared me for David speaking directly into the life I had built after him.

Rachel remained beside me without touching me.

Eventually, I looked up.

“Caleb read
