don’t know.”

“Find them before anyone can delete anything.”

Caleb’s laptop was now evidence.

They made a forensic copy.

I hated handing it over.

The computer felt like one of the last places Caleb still existed.

But this was why he had preserved everything.

To be found.

To be used.

Price told Singh about the green ledger.

She looked at Rachel.

“Who is Lena?”

Rachel explained Nora’s daughter.

“We need her contacted carefully.”

“Can we call?”

“Not yet.”

Singh asked whether Nora had kept a home, storage unit, safe-deposit box, attorney, or estate locate her.”

Singh looked at me.

“Do not contact Daniel Vale again.”

“He contacted me.”

“Then save everything and do not engage.”

“What about Samuel?”

“We’ll speak with him.”

“He may deny what he admitted.”

“He may.”

“Then what?”

“Then we build the case with evidence that doesn’t depend on his conscience.”

That sentence steadied me.

Evidence.

Not fear.

Not memory alone.

Evidence.

We spent nearly three hours giving statements.

By the time we left, afternoon had turned gray.

Price insisted we not return to my house immediately.

“My sister’s.”

I said.

He shook his head.

“If Caleb’s been watched for months, assume close family is known.”

I hated how reasonable that sounded.

Rachel suggested Emily’s hospital.

Public.

Secure.

I almost objected.

Then I realized the safest place might indeed be one with cameras, staff, and controlled access.

We drove there.

Emily was sitting upright when we entered.

She took one look at us and said, “What happened?”

Rachel closed the door.

“We found the box.”

Emily looked at me.

“And?”

I sat.

“Your father was right.”

Her face tightened.

“About what?”

“David’s death.”

She closed her eyes.

I told her the parts she needed.

Not every detail.

Not Samuel striking David.

Not yet.

But enough.

Meridian.

Stolen money.

Michael.

Marcus.

Martin.

The lake.

The cover-up.

Emily listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she whispered, “Caleb was right.”

“Yes.”

For a moment, grief and pride became the same emotion.

Then Emily asked, “Did you find the green book?”

Rachel stared.

“You know about it?”

“Caleb mentioned it.”

“When?”

“A week before he died.”

My pulse quickened.

“What exactly did he say?”

Emily looked toward the door, thinking.

“He said there might be a ledger.”

“Did he know where?”

“No.”

“Did he mention Nora?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“He said Nora left a clue nobody had understood.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“What clue?”

Emily frowned.

“It was something about a cabin.”

Rachel went still.

“What cabin?”

Emily looked at her.

“You know?”

Rachel’s expression had changed completely.

“Thomas’s parents had a cabin.”

“Where?”

“Outside Blue Ridge.”

“When was the last time anyone used it?”

“Years.”

“Who owns it?”

“I think Lena.”

The room sharpened around us.

Thomas told Nora where he put copies.

Nora’s daughter inherited her belongings.

If the missing page identified a place—

“Could Green Book be there?”

Emily asked.

Rachel stood.

“It could.”

I reached for my phone.

Price answered on the second ring.

I told him about the cabin.

He swore quietly.

“Do not go there.”

“We weren’t planning to.”

That was only partly true.

He said state investigators would coordinate with Georgia know.”

“What if whoever is watching us knows about the cabin too?”

“We move faster than they do.”

I wanted to believe him.

After the call, Emily asked me to come closer.

I moved beside the bed.

She placed her hand over her chest.

“You can feel it.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“Caleb’s heart.”

Every muscle in my body locked.

“No.”

Emily immediately withdrew her hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t.”

“I shouldn’t have—”

“I just can’t.”

Not yet.

Maybe never.

The thought of placing my hand on another person and feeling my son’s heartbeat was unbearable.

Emily nodded.

“I understand.”

I sat beside her.

“Caleb cared about you.”

Her eyes filled.

“I cared about him too.”

“Why didn’t either of you tell me?”

“He wanted one relationship that wasn’t about being sick.”

That answer hurt.

Because I understood it.

With me, every conversation had eventually become medication, appetite, appointments, pain.

With Emily, perhaps he had been Caleb instead of a patient.

“What did you talk about?”

“Everything.”

“Such as?”

“She rolled her eyes.”

“You.”

I almost smiled.

“Of course.”

“He said you pretended not to cry during movies.”

“I don’t.”

“He had examples.”

“Traitor.”

Emily smiled.

Then the smile disappeared.

“He also talked about David.”

I waited.

“He was afraid he’d forgotten his voice.”

The sentence went through me.

I had forgotten that fear.

Children lose voices before faces.

Cadence before images.

The exact shape of laughter.

“I have recordings.”

Emily looked surprised.

“Of David?”

“Old home videos.”

“Caleb knew?”

“Yes.”

“Did he watch them?”

“Sometimes.”

She nodded.

“He told me he was afraid if he learned too much about how David died, it would replace the good memories.”

I looked down at my hands.

That was what Caleb had been carrying.

Not simple curiosity.

The fear that truth could consume love.

“He shouldn’t have had to do this alone.”

“He wasn’t alone.”

Emily said it gently.

I looked at her.

“No.”

For the first time, I understood their connection without resentment.

She had known the child David saved.

Caleb had known the father she remembered.

Between them, they had been reconstructing a man both had lost differently.

A nurse entered to check Emily’s vital signs.

Rachel stepped into the hall to call family.

I remained.

Later, while Emily slept, her phone buzzed on the bedside table.

The screen lit.

A message preview.

Unknown Sender.

My eyes caught the words before I could look away.

Caleb lied to you too.

I stared.

Emily woke at the sound.

“What?”

I handed her the phone.

She read the message.

Her face tightened.

Another arrived.

Ask his mother what really killed him.

Everything inside me went cold.

“What does that mean?”

Emily whispered.

I did not know.

Caleb had died from complications of infection during treatment.

His doctors had explained it clearly.

Or so I believed.

The phone buzzed a third time.

He was investigating Meridian when he got sick again.

I stood.

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

Emily stared at me.

“Maybe.”

“No.”

I heard the defensiveness in my own voice.

Illness had been part of Caleb’s life for months.

His immune system was compromised.

Infections happened.

Cancer progressed.

Treatment failed.

Not every tragedy was part of the mystery.

It could not be.

Then I remembered something.

Two days before his final hospitalization, Caleb had vomited after returning from an appointment.

He told me treatment was making him sick.

I believed him.

Why wouldn’t I?

Emily was watching my face.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You remembered something.”

“He was
