Depends on condition, records, embalming, injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The thought of disturbing David\u2019s grave sickened me.<\/p>\n<p>But so did leaving the lie intact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to your investigation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel asked.<\/p>\n<p>Price leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was investigating charity fraud after another family complained about missing grant money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe complaint vanished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily withdrew it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said the accounting error had been corrected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never believed so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price followed money anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Meridian appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Then Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>When Price requested broader records, his supervisor ordered him to close the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s brother-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had been right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about David?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis death happened while I was still looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you connect it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI received an anonymous envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA copy of one page from a notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s missing page.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price was silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt listed names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael Rourke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus Ellison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel Hart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The four men in the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Thomas said not to trust the first name on the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the page also included a note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cS.H. may be helping them, may be trapped. Verify before accusing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded exactly like David.<\/p>\n<p>Careful.<\/p>\n<p>Precise.<\/p>\n<p>Unwilling to make assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first name was Samuel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s warning made sense now.<\/p>\n<p>Do not trust the first name on it.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked guilty.<\/p>\n<p>He was guilty.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps not in the same way as the others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to your copy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStolen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo sign of forced entry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Internal access.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you keep another?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who sent it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had told Nora where copies were.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she sent one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else did David write?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne line bothered me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe mentioned a secondary ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething he called Green Book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas there a green book in Thomas\u2019s box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price tapped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid believed the notebook page wasn\u2019t enough. He thought there was a full transaction ledger proving how much money had moved through Meridian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the audio.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said the missing page contained a place where evidence had been stored.<\/p>\n<p>Nora was supposed to understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said it aloud.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora\u2019s daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora may have had the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she did, Lena might have inherited it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We called from the library.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had an old number.<\/p>\n<p>Disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>She found Lena through social media but no public phone number.<\/p>\n<p>There was an address listed for a small photography studio outside Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>Price advised against contacting her through a public account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if Daniel Vale knew about Thomas\u2019s box, he may be watching anyone connected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe already watched Caleb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price studied the photographs again.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked a question that changed the direction of everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your son leave records of his online research?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmail?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrowser history?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCloud storage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen before chasing Lena, look at what Caleb already found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was right.<\/p>\n<p>My son had spent months on this.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had reached further than any of us knew.<\/p>\n<p>Back home, Rachel and I opened Caleb\u2019s laptop.<\/p>\n<p>His files were organized obsessively.<\/p>\n<p>Folders by name.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Documents.<\/p>\n<p>One directory was labeled MERIDIAN.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were screenshots of corporate records.<\/p>\n<p>Old hospital board minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Archived articles.<\/p>\n<p>Tax filings.<\/p>\n<p>And a spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Rows of names filled the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Families.<\/p>\n<p>Grant amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital charges.<\/p>\n<p>Meridian invoices.<\/p>\n<p>Discrepancies.<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb had not found one family.<\/p>\n<p>He had found twenty-seven.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-seven children whose aid payments appeared to have been partially rerouted.<\/p>\n<p>Some from ten years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Some newer.<\/p>\n<p>Much newer.<\/p>\n<p>I scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Six.<\/p>\n<p>Four.<\/p>\n<p>Two.<\/p>\n<p>Then one from the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meridian had not merely inherited the stain of Martin Vale\u2019s crimes.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern had continued.<\/p>\n<p>Under Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb had discovered it.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the final row.<\/p>\n<p>The patient initials were unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital was not Emily\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The grant amount was thirty thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Meridian invoice: nineteen thousand.<\/p>\n<p>Service description: specialized patient transport.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the hospital notes.<\/p>\n<p>The child had never used specialized transport.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb had highlighted the line.<\/p>\n<p>Next to it, he wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Same scheme. Still active.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s phone call echoed.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever happened years ago has nothing to do with current operations.<\/p>\n<p>A lie.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least something dangerously close to one.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw another file.<\/p>\n<p>EMAIL_DV.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>A saved message from Daniel Vale to Caleb.<\/p>\n<p>It was dated six weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb,<\/p>\n<p>You are misunderstanding old accounting records and making irresponsible assumptions about current business practices.<\/p>\n<p>Stop contacting former employees and families.<\/p>\n<p>If you continue, I will treat this as harassment and take whatever steps are necessary to protect Meridian and its staff.<\/p>\n<p>Below that, Caleb had saved his draft reply.<\/p>\n<p>It contained only one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Then explain why the same money is still disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cHe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel knew Caleb had uncovered the ongoing scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Not just his father\u2019s crimes.<\/p>\n<p>His own company\u2019s present activity.<\/p>\n<p>Then another file caught my eye.<\/p>\n<p>A voice memo.<\/p>\n<p>DATE: THREE DAYS BEFORE HOSPITAL.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Breathing hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think somebody followed me from Meridian\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel grabbed my arm.<\/p>\n<p>On the recording, Caleb described visiting a public records office near Meridian headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>A man had watched him leave.<\/p>\n<p>Followed him to a gas station.<\/p>\n<p>Then to a pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb had lost the vehicle in traffic.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded frightened.<\/p>\n<p>But there was something else.<\/p>\n<p>Triumph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got the ledger name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called it the green ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cGreen Book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caleb continued.<\/p>\n<p>An old Meridian employee had told him Martin kept a handwritten record separate from official accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Every diverted grant.<\/p>\n<p>Every payment.<\/p>\n<p>Every person receiving a share.<\/p>\n<p>The employee believed the ledger still existed.<\/p>\n<p>And Martin had not kept it at Meridian.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb said the employee gave him one clue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Hart knew where it went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had told Nora.<\/p>\n<p>Nora had left belongings to Lena.<\/p>\n<p>The missing page likely contained the location.<\/p>\n<p>The green ledger could prove both the old fraud and perhaps reveal how the scheme survived.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>A new message.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>No greeting.<\/p>\n<p>No name.<\/p>\n<p>Only five words.<\/p>\n<p>You found Caleb\u2019s files.<\/p>\n<p>Below it was a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Taken through my kitchen window.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel and I were both visible inside.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=23953\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Someone Watching My House Forced Us to Run, and Caleb\u2019s Hidden Map Pointed Toward Evidence Buried Since David\u2019s Death<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not answer Daniel immediately.
